女人看见路边蹲着一个挑担老头儿，他身下的筐里满满一筐仙人掌，嫁接出各种形状，高高的底座像一座独立秀挺的山峰，山峰项部是形状不同的红、黄、绿各色仙人球。女人拿起仙人掌左右挑选了很久，价格不贵，与花鸟市场上的相比便宜许多，挑定了自己喜欢的两个，准备双数一起买。
老头儿满脸胡茬儿，一个劲说这植物的种种优点，如何好看好养还净化空气，未了搓着厚皮疙瘩的手说：“两个就算你小批发。”又便宜了一块钱。
“你这是真嫁接上去的，还是用牙签插上去的？”这样的价钱，女人总觉不安，终于指着山峰项部的红黄绿颜色的仙人球提出疑问。脸上是浓重的怀疑，蛮好的花买回家后发现是新种没有根的，这种事情不是发生了一次。
老头儿却生气了，脸腾地红上来，结结巴巴地说：“怎么可能是插上去的？怎么可能是插上去的？都是我一棵一棵栽起来的。”
“是吗？”她冷眼旁观，反问道。这样的表白她也见多了，倘若是货真价实的东西，何必这么着急，她心里又想。
眼看就要成功的交易，因为这一问停了下来，他着急得差点手舞足蹈，而他越是叽里咕噜地急着解释：她越觉得他不诚实。忽然，老头儿停了下来，从筐里拿起一棵茁壮的仙人掌，没等女人反应过来，用力一拉，把它的顶部从底峰土扯了下来，然后一手一个举到女人眼前：“有牙签吗？”他用力问她。
没有牙签，扁扁的巴掌形的黄绿色软刺仙人球从它的底峰土掉了下来？而它的底峰上生生裂开一道绿色肉质沟壑，那首尾两截早已浑然一体地生长。
证明了真假，女人付钱，老头儿一脸自尊，挺着胸膛收钱，三块钱一个，五块钱两个，老头儿从布衫口袋里摸出装钱的塑料袋，该找多少还找多少，也不计较身首异处的那一个。
老头儿站起来把东西包扎好，送进女人的车筐里。生意小，服务周到，站起身时，顺手捡起地上已成两截的东西，一起送进了女人的筐里。
“不要扔了，两截一起种在泥土里，两截都能活。”老头说。他笑了起来，露出锈蚀的牙齿，用东倒西歪的普通话安慰她，“放心好了，这植物最耐析腾，刚才那点事算不了什么，只要有点泥，就能长出根的。”
两截还能活，这不假，但女人看着老头儿还是觉得心里生疼，仿佛受了伤的不是那棵仙人掌，而是别的什么，那别的什么像一只小手，躲在她的胸膛里，一下一下地搬她的心。那疼隐隐地从他脚下的那堆根须里传过来、从他鬼样的普通话中传过来，从他那已经装在布彩口袋里的塑料钱袋里传过来，从路上来往不息的车流人群里传过来，疼得她直想落泪。
