| In the deserts of North Africa and Saudi Arabia lives the smallest of all foxes with the largest of ears. This animal is the fennec fox. Fennec foxes have ears that are 5 to 6 inches long. That's big for an animal that weighs less than four pounds. Their ears help shed (去除) body heat. And, as you may have guessed, they also provide great hearing. It's also interesting to think about the hair of fennec foxes. Why would a fox that lives in the desert need a thick, fur coat? Actually, the desert isn't always warm. During the nighttime, a desert can be terribly cold! A fennec fox's fur keeps them warm during those desert nights. They also have long bushy tails that they use as a blanket. And the hair on their feet protects them from the hot sand in the daytime. Fennec foxes live in small communities of dens (兽穴).They spend most of the day sleeping in their dens, out of the hot sun. Then, when night comes, they come out in search of food. In addition to their great hearing, fennecs also use their great sense of smell and big eyes to track down dinner. Like other foxes, fennecs are omnivores. This means they eat both meat and plants. They like eating birds, eggs, insects, snails, fruit and leaves best. Fennec fox mothers have one to five babies at a time. The lifespan of a fennec fox is 10 to 12 years. The cream coloration of fennec foxes help them blend into their desert habitat. Still, they have to watch out for predators (捕食性动物). These include caracals ( a type of wild cat ) , jackals, eagle owls, hyenas and humans. Humans catch them for their fur and to sell as pets. | |

Scientists also say that sharks would not waste energy trying to eat a human, as we have a lot of bones (骨头). It is hard for a shark to eat us because sharks don’t have hands, and they can’t pull the meat off our bones. Maybe that’s why they only bite us once. Unluckily, one bite from a large shark is serious enough to hurt people greatly!
Another opinion is that sharks attack humans by mistake. Some sharks may sometimes mistake humans for a seal. An example of this is when a shark attacks a surfer. A surfer lying on a surfboard looks like a seal when seen from below. Sharks like seals because they have thick fat.
Whatever the reason for shark attacks on humans, sharks should be afraid of us. Sadly, we kill almost 40 million of them each year.

Today it costs a few cents to buy a comb (梳子) for your hair. But 300 years ago, the comb was costly. It was then an important part of a person's wealth (财富). Records show that pirates(海盗)made it a point to take combs of the people on board any ship they robbed.
How old are combs? Some combs, made of bone, have been found at the sites(遗址)of early humans. This would place the comb's age at about 9,000 years. Even these combs were made to look pretty. They had shapes of animals carved(雕刻)on them.
The best combs of all were the ones that were used in church. Some of these combs were covered with gold. For a long time, it was a custom (习俗) in the Greek (希腊的) Church to comb a priest's (牧师)hair before all the people.
The comb is special to the Japanese. The Japanese women are known for the way they put up their thick, long, black hair. They hold their hair in place with combs. Some Japanese people feel that throwing away a comb will bring bad luck. Also, it is bad luck to pick one up. But a comb received as a parting gift is felt to bring good luck. The comb is supposed to make all the paths(道路)straight. This is because it makes one's hair straight.
