If you visit London nowadays , you'll see a lot of buses and cars on the road , you'll also see a lot of bikes because nowadaysmore and more people travel by bike.

There are a lot of reasons for this. First, it's very cheap to use a bike, and it's quick too. You often wait for a bus for half an hour. When the bus comes, there are so many other buses and cars on the roads that the bus moves very slowly. The underground train is quick but very expensive and often crowded.

I travelled to work by bus for about four years. I often arrived at work late, and tired. Then one day, about two years ago, a colleague (同事)said , “I go to work by bike , why don't we travel together?”

“Because my bike's old,”I answered, “and there are so many buses and cars on the road. I'll feel frightened …”“You needn't feel frightened! ”said my friend, “If you follow me and we ride slowly, you'll be fine. ”

Although we went slowly, we arrived at work quickly. The bus ride took forty minutes and the bike ride took half an hour!

The next day I bought myself a new bike. Now I don't feelafraid. I love cycling to work. I take a different road every day. I arrive at work very quickly. I've got a little more money now, and very important, I feel fit and well.

Many people think in the same way as I do. That's why you see a lot of bikes on the road. Who knows, perhaps in the future we'll have roads for bicycles only. I hope so!

阅读下面短文,然后根据短文内容选择最佳答案。

Take a rapid look at someone, then look away.Do you realize you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement.Hold it for three seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is an allowed time that you can hold a person's look without being close, rude or dangerous. If you are on a lift, what stare time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you specially do.You very likely give other passengers a quick look to judge of them and to let them believe that you mean no harm.Since being close to another person suggests the possibility of communication, you need to give a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact(接触), what Dr.Erving Goffman(1963)calls“a dimming of the lights”.You look down at the floor, at the lift door, or anywhere but into another passenger's eyes.If you break the rule against staring at a stranger on a lift, you'll make the other person gradually uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.

If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance, a man and a woman communicate interest in this matter. They may look at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals,“I know you”,“I am interested in you”,or“You look strange and I am curious about you”.This type of stare often produces unfriendly feelings.

If you come to school one day and all your friends are talking to their computers, don’t worry. There’s nothing wrong with them, and there’s nothing wrong with you. They are all just using a new kind of programme, which can listen to your voice and remember who you are.Talking computers are now new.People were very interested in them twenty years ago, but they never worked very well. They only knew about 1,000 words, and you need 10,000 words to carry out most activities. Most programmes now know 30,000 words.

Everybody is using voice programmes today. If you make a telephone call about a product or a service or if you make plane or car booking, you may find you are talking to computer.Soon we’ll be able to send messages with our voices, and give instructions to our computers.A big computer will keep 50 numbers, so when you want to call your travel agent Maria, you simply pick up the phone and say “Maria”, and Maria answers the phone. In some large companies the computer can let you talk to any person you want. Many banks and stores are interested in developing these programmes.

There are even some new programmes which can remember 50,000 words. They are useful for people who need to put large amounts of text into computers. This is a good thing for people like doctors and writers because it is very quick. They can just talk straight into the computer.

We all speak in a different way, so how does the machine know what we are saying? You need to teach it to remember the way speak by reading lists of words slowly into the machine.People who like talking into the computer say that it is much better and cheaper than using a keyboard. This means that they have more time to do more important and more interesting things.

1.If you make a phone call on a talking computer, you say the person’s ___________ instead of his or her telephone number.
