Dear John, Thank you very much for your letter. I am glad that you enjoyed your holiday with me. We enjoyed having you and your sister here. We hope that you will both be able to come again next year. Perhaps you’ll be able to stay longer next time you come. A week is not really long enough, is it? If your school has a five-week holiday next year, perhaps(或许) you’ll be able to stay with us for two or three weeks.

We have been back at school three weeks now. It feels like three months! I expect(期待) that you are both working very hard now that you are in Grade One. I shall have to work hard next year when I am in Grade One. Tom and Ann won’t be in Grade One until 2011.

They went for a picnic yesterday but I didn’t go with them because I cut my foot and I couldn’t walk very well. They went to an island and enjoyed themselves. Do you still remember the island? That’s where all five of us spent the last day of our holiday.

Tom, Ann and I send our best wishes to Betty and you. We hope to see you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Michael

He came again the next day and worked until it was time to leave. His name was Jerry. He was 12 and had been at the Children's Home(孤儿院)since he was only four. \ I thought of him. He was honest(诚实). For example, the handle (柄) of the ax (斧)broke one day. Jerry said the Children's Home would mend it. I handed him some money to pay for it. He wouldn't take the money. "I'll pay for it, mama. I broke it. I didn't hit the wood in the right place. "
"But Jerry, no one hits the wood in the right place all the time. And it was a weak handle. I'll speak to the seller. " It was only then that he would take the money.
Another thing about Jerry was that he would do those little but helpful things. The things would not be badly needed but would make life so much easier. For example, he found a hole near the fireplace. "I'll put some wood in the hole, mama. Then when a sudden storm(暴风雨)comes up, you can stay warm. "
One cold day, Jerry sat close by me near the fire. We watched the fire bum. He suddenly talked of something he had never talked of before. "You look like my mother, especially(特别) next to the fire"

Do you still get free plastic(塑料) bags from the supermarkets?

Free plastic bags are not allowed at shops and supermarkets in China, and people have to pay for them. The rule started on June 1, 2009. It came because our country tried to make litter less. Making super-thin (超薄) plastic bags has not allowed.

The Chinese once used about 3,000,000,000 plastic shopping bags a day, and they have caused pollution of the environment. The bags have become a main cause of plastic pollution because they are easy to break and people throw them away here and there. So the Chinese people are encouraged to bring their own bags for shopping.

What kind of shopping bag is the best to bring? Some students in Chongqing city have a good idea. They make their own shopping bags. They use old clothes to make cloth bags, and send them to their parents as presents. They also ask their parents and friends to use cloth bags instead of plastic ones. They think it is their duty to protect the environment.

1.China made this rule because plastic bags were bad for the _______.

A. environment         B. litter       C. shops         D. supermarkets

A. no bags                   B. free plastic bags
