Taro I'm interested in gestures (手势).

Helen Are you? Gestures differ (不同) from country to country.

Taro Yes, learning about gestures is a lot of fun (很开心).

Helen I've noticed that Japanese women often cover their mouths when they laugh.

Taro They think it is impolite to show their teeth.

Helen I once talked to some students from India. They moved their heads up and down when they meant no, and from side to side for yes. That looked strange to me.

Taro Is that right? I thought nodding meant yes in all parts of the world.

Helen No, not in some parts of India. But those students said their gestures were so natural (自然的) to them that they couldn't change them.

Taro This is one of the most popular comics (最流行的滑稽剧) in my country. Do people in American comics jump this way when they are surprised?

Helen Yes, they do. comics always use big gestures, you know. (Helen shows Taro a picture of a man.)

Taro I've often seen this picture. He is shrugging (耸肩) his shoulders, isn't he?

Helen Yes, he is. It means I don't care or I give up.

Helen How do you gesture with your hand when you mean come here in Japan?

Taro We hold out our hand with the palm upward, and move it up and down.

Helen That looks like Sit down”,“Be quiet, orGet away to us. When we mean Come here we hold out our hand with the palm upward, and move our fingers toward our body.
