　　On April 8, a report came out on the lives of high school students in China, Japan, South Korea and the US．It surveyed around 6, 200 students from the four countries last year．You will find the answers to many of your questions in this report．

　　Chinese students spend the most time studying．Nearly half of Chinese students spend more than two hours on their homework every day．That's much more than students of the US(26.4％), Japan(8.2％)and South Korea(5.2％)．

　　Japanese students fall asleep in class most often．About 45％ of them said they sometimes doze off in class．In South Korea, it's 32％; in the US, 21％; and 5％ in China．

　　South Korean students don't like taking notes．About 70％ said they write down what the teacher says in class, many fewer than in Japan(93％), China(90％)and the US(89％)．

　　Who is the most distracted(分心的)?

　　American students are the most active in class, but also the most distracted：64.2％ said they chat with friends in class; 46.9％ said they eat snacks in class; and 38.9％ said they send e-mails or read unrelated(无关的)books in class．

　　What do they do after school?

　　In their spare time, most Chinese students study or surf the Internet．Most American students hang out with their friends．Most Japanese students do physical exercises．Most Korean students watch TV．

　　Meng Chen is a student in Beijing．He goes to the Forbidden City almost every day．The 20-year-old volunteers there．He tells visitors about the clocks in the clock gallery(钟表馆)．

　　Meng is one of around 300 volunteer tour guides in the Forbidden City．One-third of them are university students．They hang around the palace like other visitors, but with red “volunteer” cards on their clothes．

　　Meng said he loves spending time in the buildings where 25 emperors(皇帝)spent their whole lives．“Every brick has a story to tell, ” he said．

　　But volunteer work is more than fun．Meng has to study for the job．It took him about three months to remember every detail(细节)of the 176 clocks in the clock gallery．

　　And it can be frustrating(让人泄气的)．Often, tourists turn down volunteering guides．“Too many people are in a rush to finish sightseeing．They don't have time to listen to us, ” said Shi Hui．He is a university student who volunteers there．

　　On his first day, Shi walked around for three hours until he found a man in his 50s who was happy to listen to him．

　　“It's always fun to have listeners who are interested in your talk, ” Shi said．

　　When she turned ten, my daughter decided I was no longer good enough to provide input on anything useful．Then, in high school she took a parenting class．

　　“Mum, I need your idea,” she told me．“What are the skills you need to be a good parent?” she asked, pencil pointed over her homework．

　　Skills? I’d always thought of parenting as requiring patience, understanding and kindness．And I was pretty sure those were characteristics(性格), not skills．

　　“Hang on, I know this one,” I told her, thinking fast．Looking at the wall calendar(日历), I noted that my next seven days included two appointments(约会), 20 minutes each, three forms to hand in at two different schools and a cover for the pool to pick up．“Organizational(组织的)skills,” I answered．“It also helps if you can drive－and have the ability to be in two places at once．”

　　“Got it,” she said．“What else?”

　　I thought about the school year：school fees(学费), class pictures, running shoes．Not to mention weekly shopping－the bill for which was growing as fast as the kids．

　　“Financial(理财的)skills,”I said．“You’ll have to plan your money－especially if you end up with two birthdays in one pay period．You must be good at math, too．”

　　“Money and math make sense,”she said．“Anything more?”

　　“You also need a good memory,”I continued．“At any given time, you may remember birthdays, names of people and who likes apples or who can’t stand grape juice．”

　　I talked and talked．My daughter’s pencil moved quickly as she tried to keep up with what I was saying．Her homework finally finished．My daughter told me about a new parenting-skill project(项目)．“We’re getting dolls programmed to cry from time to time．We have to keep them with us all the time and take care of them．It’s to show us how hard it is to be a parent．”

　　I thought if students would come up with a doll that throws things around and shouts at the top of its voice, that might give them an idea of the patience, understanding and kindness that parenting requires．
