Chinese living on less than 637 yuan a year are in terrible poverty. Those who live on less than 882 yuan are in the low income (低收入) group.

In 1978, 250 million Chinese lived in extreme(极端) poverty. Today, 29 million, or 3 percent of the population, are still very poor. Most are farmers from Central (中部的)  and Western China.
