While Nick was on the bus reading his newspaper, the man sitting next to him suddenly pushed a large envelope（信封）into his hands. "Here, take this!" the man said, stood up and got off the bus before Nick could say a word.

    Nick sat there, holding the envelope. It felt heavy.  There was paper inside, or money perhaps. "I'd better hand it over to the police," he thought. There was a police station close to his office. But, as he got off the bus, a man came to him. He seemed to be waiting for something.   "He wants the envelope," Nick thought. Nick began to walk quickly, and the man hurried after him. Nick managed to lose the man in the crowd（人群）．When he entered the police station, the man was no longer in sight.

    Inside the police station, Nick handed over the envelope to the policeman who was on duty.  The man opened it. The envelope was full of money, false（假的）money.“Clearly the man made a mistake," the policeman said. "He thought you were one of the gang（团伙）!”

    “However," the policeman went on. "I'm afraid I must ask you to keep quiet about all this.  We are trying to catch some very clever thieves, and we don't want them to know that we have some of the money. So you mustn't say a word to anyone-not even to your boss!"

As a girl, I've spent a great deal of my time on earth concerned about my weight. So I do know something about exercise. Let me tell you about the calorie-burning activities I've tried or will try.

Salsa (萨尔萨舞)

I try to maintain my weight through dancing. Dancing improves my coordination and sense of rhythm in addition to burning calories. I'm personally interested in salsa, which I find sexy and expressive(有表现力的). But I have not yet to start classes, because classes are very expensive, and I cannot find a dance partner.

Ping-Pong

Ping-pong is the national sport of China, so how could I know nothing about it?

My father is a ping-pong fan, and a really good player. He's won several informal (非正式的) matches. My relationship with ping-pong has always been on-and-off. I'll get into it for a while, and then lose interest. The reason is because I can’t find a good partner. Some stronger can depress you, while someone weaker (or just as weak) can make the game boring.

Tae Kwon Do （跆拳道）

I've recently decided to try tae kwon do as my regular exercise activity. There’s a story behind this choice: A few weeks ago, I was sitting on a bus, concentrating on a book. Suddenly, the bus became very quiet except for the sound of a woman’s crying. I looked up to see what had happened and overheard whispers that she had just quarreled with a man, and the man slapped(拍打) her face. No one on the bus dared say anything because the man looked really strong. Even now I feel ashamed I was among the silent.

That’s why I've made up my mind to learn something that will help me protect others and myself.

　　There is a lake near a forest in Sweden. The water in the lake is very clear and everything is quiet and still. On the far side of the water is some farmland and further away, across the field, is an old church built on a hill. It is spring time and it has just stopped raining. The stream flowing into the lake is full and there is still some half-melted snow from last winter on the ground.

　　The reason why the water is so clear, and everything is so quiet and still, is that most of the plant and animal life in and around the lake is dead. There are no birds because all the fish and insects(昆虫), which the birds need for food, have disappeared. Many trees in the forest are losing their leaves and bark, and are sick and dying. Others were blown down by the high winds of last winter. A farmer is working in a field planting wheat, but unless he plants a stronger kind of seed this year, the crop will be between 25 to 40 percent lower than a few years ago. The stone of the old church is turning to powder and unless the tower is repaired soon, it will fall down.

　　All the death and destruction in this place is due to(由于) pollution : pollution from smoke coming out of factory chimney and fumes(烟) coming out of the exhausts(排气) of cars and trucks. And yet this silent lake is hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest factory and motor way.
