题目列表(包括答案和解析)
Take a look at the label(标签)on almost any bottle of milk and you may see the word PASTEURIZED.What does that mean? Let's find out by meeting Louis Pasteur.Louis Pasteur was born in 1822 in a little town in France. As he grew up,he loved to paint. He loved to look at the world around him. When he went to college in Paris,he showed interest in looking through a microscope.A microscope makes things look a lot bigger,it lets you see things you can't see just with your eyes.Looking through a microscope,Pasteur found a living world in a drop of water. He saw and drew pictures of the small living things--he called them “microbes” or “germs” --that crowded in a drop of water. One day a winemaker came into the lab, hoping that someone could help him with his problem.“Sometimes my wine tastes delicious, but sometimes terrible,” he said to Pasteur.“Can you help me find out why?”
Pasteur put some drops of the wine under the microscope. He noticed that the terrible wine had some unusual germs. If he killed these germs, maybe he could keep the wine from turning terrible. He tried with different ways to kill the germs. In the end he found heating(加热)the wine seemed to work best. The winemaker tried it,and every bottle of wine tasted good.Pasteur's idea worked for other people, too. When farmers heated milk,it didn't turn bad so quickly.Beer is heated,it tasted better.People called it “pasteurization” --heating a liquid to kill bad germs.Aren't you glad that the milk you drink has been pasteurized?

The little island of Symi had a big party not long ago. Everyone sang and danced in the streets. Bells rang. Flags waved.
What was it all about?
For the first time, this island of Greece had its own fresh water. Women could fill their pails with all the water they wanted!
Very little rain falls on Symi. The people have always saved every drop they could get. But it has never been enough for their needs. They have had to buy water brought by ships.
Now Symi has its own “water factory. ” The factory changes salt water from the sea into fresh water that people can drink.
Most of the ways to turn salt water into fresh cost a lot of money. The Symi factory uses a way that costs very little.
What is the factory like? How does it work?
Right in the middle of the town are some long ponds (池塘).
Over each pond is a low tent. It is made of plastic that you can see through.
At night, sea water is pumped (抽) into the ponds. The next day, the hot sun shines through the tents. The sun's heat turns the water into vapor that rises from the ponds. The salt is left behind.
As it rises, the vapor becomes mist (轻雾). On the inside of each tent, the tiny drops of mist run together to make big drops. These run down the sides of the tent, filling a tank (桶) with fresh water.
The salt left behind in the ponds is washed out each night. Then more sea water is pumped in, The factory is, ready for the next day's work.
The tents and other parts of the factory cost very little. Sea water and sun cost nothing. Most people on Symi are poor. So to them this new way of getting fresh water seems wonderful!

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. If we didn't see any rain soon, we would lose everything.
One day when I was in the kitchen, I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking towards the forest. He was clearly trying to be as still as possible. Several minutes after, he had gone into the forest, he ran out again, towards. the house. This activity went on for an hour, walking carefully to the forest and running back to the house. I really wanted to know what Billy was doing.
Finally I followed him into the forest. I found that he was holding a cup of water. He walked very carefully not to drop the water.
I saw a baby deer lying on the ground. It lifted its head to drink the water in my son's cup. After the deer drank up, Billy jumped up and ran back to the house to get more water. When he saw me, he said, "I'm not wasting. " I found that his eyes were filled with tears.
“I know. " I watched the most beautiful heart working so hard to save another life.Tears ran down my face. As my tear drops began to hit the ground, other drops and more drops and more suddenly joined them I looked up at the sky. It was raining.
Some people would say this was all just a huge coincidence (巧合). Those miracles(奇迹) don't really exist (存在). I would like to believe it was a miracle. All I can say is that the rain that came that day saved our farm just like the actions of one little boy saved a life.
