　　When the weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cold. Why? The sun makes the earth hot but it can not make the water very hot. Although the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth goes up. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When it moves in, you feel the wind. And the wind makes you cool.

　　Of course, scientists can not answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why is the ocean full of salt?” Scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks(断裂). Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries salt into the ocean. But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the ocean?” The ocean does not get more salty every year. Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.

　　Scientists can tell just how hot the surface of the moon get when it faces the sun, and how cold it becomes it turns away. The side of the moon toward the sun gets two degrees hotter than boiling water, while the night side reaches 243 degree below zero.

　　In an eclipse(月蚀), the earth's shadow falls on the moon. Then the moon's temperature may drop 300 degrees in a very short time.

　　A temperature change like this cannot happen on the earth, but why does it happen on the moon? Scientists think that the surface of the moon is dust. On the earth, rocks store heat from the sun. When the sun goes down, the rocks stay warm. But the dust of the moon cannot do this. So when the moon becomes dark, the heat goes away quickly, and it gets very cold.
