The first Olympic (奥林匹克运动会) took place at Olympia(奥林匹亚) in Greece in 776 BC, almost 3000 years ago. Many different sports, such as boxing, running, and throwing the discus (铁饼), were played there, though there were fewer sports than in the modem Olympics. People from all over Greece came and watched the Games at the foot of the Mount Olympus(奥林匹斯山), and even those at war stopped fighting and went on with games.
In April 6,1896 the first Olympics were held in Greece. Only 50, 000 people watched the Games, but the rest of the world soon became enthusiastic(热心的) about them and from 1900 the Games were held every four years in a different country.
