       Once three men got to the Dover station at about nine o'clock one evening.  One of them asked a
porter(行季搬运工) what time the next train for London was. The porter answered, "You have just
missed one. They go hourly. The next train is at ten. "
       The three men decided to go off the station. So they went to a bar.
       A minute or two after ten o'clock they began running into the station, the porter told them the train
had just left. So they went back to the last one. "If you miss the train, you won't get to London tonight,"
the porter said.
      Twelve o'clock came, and the last train was starting out when all of the three men tried to catch the
train as fast as they could. Two of them got into the carriage, but the third of them didn't run fast enough.
The train went out and left him behind. He laughed until tears came out of his eyes. Then he caught hold
of the porter's hand and said,  " Well,  I myself have to go to London, and they only come here to see
me off(送行). "

     Jim went into the station soon after five o'clock in the afternoon. This is a bad time to travel in Paris,
both by bus and by train, because lots of people go home from work at this hour. He had to join a long
queue of people who were waiting for tickets. When at last his turn came, he got the right ticket. By
asking several people the way, he also found the right platform (站台). It was crowded and he was not
able to get on the first train, but he was able to move nearer to the edge (边) of the platform to be ready
to get on the next one. When the train came in, Jim was thrown onto the train by the rush of the people
behind. The doors closed and the train moved off. Since he was unable to see the names of the stations
where the train stopped, he had to count the number of stops so that he knew where to get off. His station was the seventh along the line.

  Three men got to Dover station a few minutes after nine o'clock one evening. They asked a guard,“What time is the next train for London?”

  The guard said,“You've just missed one. A train goes every hour. The next one is at ten o'clock.”

  “That's all right.”they said,“We'll go and have a drink.”So they went to a bar (酒吧间).A minute or two after ten o'clock they came running and asked the guard ,“Has the train gone?”

  “Yes,”the guard said.“It was at ten, as I told you. The next train is at eleven o'colck.”

Two of them got on the train just as it was leaving, but the third one didn't run fast enough, and the train went out leaving him behind. He stood there looking at the train and laughing, as if (好像) to miss the train was the best joke in the world. The guard went up to him and said,“I told you that this was the last train. Why didn't you come earlier?”

  The man kept laughing until tears (眼泪) came into his eyes. Then he caught hold of (抓住)the guard and said,“Did you see the two men get into the train and leave me here?”

  “Well , I was the only one to leave for London. They were here only to see me off!”

While Nick was on the bus reading his newspaper, the man sitting next to him suddenly pushed a large envelope(信封)into his hands. "Here, take this!" the man said, stood up and got off the bus before Nick could say a word.

    Nick sat there, holding the envelope. It felt heavy.  There was paper inside, or money perhaps. "I'd better hand it over to the police," he thought. There was a police station close to his office. But, as he got off the bus, a man came to him. He seemed to be waiting for something.   "He wants the envelope," Nick thought.
