MANY 15-year-olds don’t know what they want to be when they grow up. Abby Harris knows she wants to become an astronaut and isn’t letting anything stop her.
According to Harris’ Internet blog, Astronaut Abby, she has wanted to be the first astronaut to walk on Mars since she was 5 years old.
Harris wrote that at the beginning, most people didn’t take her dream seriously. But she stuck with (坚持) it.
“I made plans, I worked hard and I focused on (集中于) my goal. As I got older and continued to stay focused on science, people in my life began to notice and encouraged me to dream big,” she wrote.
In the 7th grade, Harris was doing a project on the International Space Station. She set up a Twitter account to get in touch with NASA. But soon she found that it was a great place for her to write about her dreams and talk with others who are interested in space. Her friends on Twitter then helped her create her website and blog, Astronaut Abby.
What’s more, Harris has a real astronaut as her mentor. Several years ago, Harris ran into Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano at an airport. They talked for an hour and Parmitano agreed to become her mentor. Now Parmitano is in the International Space Station. Harris e-mails him every day to learn about his experiences.
It’s not easy to become an astronaut, but Harris is confident about herself.

Australia has a lot of lovely animals. You cannot find them anywhere else in the world. The most famous ones are kangaroos and koalas(树袋熊).

The kangaroo is the symbol of Australia. They have large eyes and ears. They don’t walk, they jump. They use their strong back legs. They can jump at up to 74 kilometers per hour. They can go over nine meters in one jump!

Kangaroo mothers have pouches(育儿袋) to carry their babies. The babies stay inside to get milk and keep warm.

Kangaroos are everywhere in Australia. They are on TV, in books and in the shops. The government even wants to put them on passports(护照).

But do you know that millions of kangaroos are killed every year? There are too many of them.

There are about 20 to 25 million kangaroos in Australia. That’s more than the number of people in the country!

Some kangaroos go hungry because there is not enough food to eat. They break into farms for food. Farmers are very angry with them.

The koala is another famous Australian animal. They look like bears, and have small eyes and big noses. They eat leaves from eucalyptus, where they spend most of their time.

Koalas have a special smell. They use it to mark their home—“This is my place, you can’t come in!”

Like kangaroos, a koala baby lives in its mother’s pouch.

Every culture has a recognized (公认的) point when a child becomes an adult, when rules must be followed and tests passed.

In China, although teenagers can get their ID cards at 16, many only see themselves as an adult when they are 18. In the US, where everyone drives, the main step to the freedom of adult life is learning to drive. At 16, American teens take their driving test. When they have their license(证), they drive into the grown-up world.

"Nobody wants to ride the cheese bus to school," said Eleanor Fulham, 17. "It's like you're not cool if you don't have a car," she said.

According to a recent research, 41% of 16 to 19 year olds in the US own cars, up from 23% in 1985. Although, most of these cars are bought by parents, some teens get part-time jobs to help pay.

Not all families can afford cars for their children. In cities with undergrounds and limited(有限的) parking, some teenagers don't want them. But in rich areas outside the city, if there are no undergrounds, and bicycles are more for fun than cars, it is strange for a teenager not to have a car.

But police say 16-year-olds have almost three times more accidents than 18 and 19-year-olds. This has made many parents stop before letting their kids drive. They need to wait until they are more experienced.

Julie Susiana, of Virginia, decided that her son Chad, 15, will wait until he is 17 to apply for his learner's permit (许可)

Chad said he has accepted his parents' decision, although it has caused some laughing from his friends. "They say that I am unlucky," he said. "But I'd rather be alive than driving, and I don't really trust my friends on the road either."

In China as more families get cars, more 18-year-olds learn to drive. Will this become a big step to becoming an adult?

1.16-year-old drivers have more accidents possibly because _______.

A. they want to show themselves off

B. they are not experienced drivers

C. older people always drive better

D. they never drive carefully on the road

2.Which may NOT be taken into consideration when deciding whether to buy a car?

A. How rich the family is.

B. Whether the kid is old enough.

C. What traffic condition there is around.

D. Whether it's practically needed.

3.The passage mainly gives information about _______.

A. an American culture about teenagers' driving

B. a change in the Chinese culture

C. a cultural difference between America and China

D. the relationship between driving and a person's development

4.Which may serve as the best title of the article?

A. Cars Helping You to Grow Up               B. Driving into the Grown-up World

C. Teenagers' Driving in America                      D. Recognized Point of Becoming an Adult
