If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to smoke without first asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops, cold water is usually served before you order. You may find the bread and the butter are free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill.

Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores and restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in big cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants are often large. If you can’t finish the meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask the waiter or the waitress for a “doggie bag”(剩菜袋). It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you are taking the food for yourself. Tips are not usually added to check. You should leave a tip of about 15% on the table when you leave. What must you do when you receive a gift for your birthday? You have to sit down and write a thank-you note. The words “thank you” are very important. We have to use them on many occasions. We say them when someone gives us a drink, help us to pick up things, hands us a letter, lends us a book or gives us lift.

(1)______ important word is “please”, _____ many people forget to use it. (2)It is impolite to ask someone to do something without saying “please”. We have to use it when we ask for something , too. It may be a book or a pen, more rice or more milk, help or advice. It may be in the classroom, at home, at the bus stop or over the counter. We have to use “please” to make request pleasant.

We have to learn to say “sorry” too. When we have hurt someone’s feeling, we will have to go up and say we’re sorry. When we have told a lie and feel sorry, we will have to use the same word. When we have forgotten something or broken a promise, we will have to explain with that word, too. “Sorry” is a healing word. We can make people forget wrongs by using it sincerely.

“Thank you! Please! Sorry!”—these words are simple but important. Man had to use them long ago. We have to use them now. Our children will have to use them again.

People in different countries have different ways of doing things. Something that is polite in one country may be quite impolite in another. In Britain, you mustn’t lift (举起) your bowl to your mouth when you are having some soup. But it’s different in China. And in Japan you even needn’t worry about making a noise when you have it. It shows that you are enjoying it. Making a noise is considered as (被认为) bad manners (举止,礼仪) in Britain. If you are a visitor in Mongolia, what manners do they wish you to have? They wish you to give a loud “burp” (打嗝) after you finish eating. Burping shows that you like the food.
