Two of the most famous symbols in the world are the Red Cross and the Red Crescent. They are the symbols of the International Red Cross Society and the Islamic version of the same group, the International Red Crescent Society. Both societies do the same thing:they help people who have been injured(受伤)in war or natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes.

In June, 1859 a Swiss man named Jean-Henri Dunant organized emergency aid for hundreds of French and Austrian soldiers who lay wounded(受伤的)and dying after the Battle of Solferino in Italy. He wrote a book about what happened and suggested that voluntary relief groups should be organized in every country.People around the world read his book and in 1864 the first groups formed under the name“International Red Cross”.

Their plan was to have ambulances(救护车)to help the injured in wartime. These ambulances would have large red crosses on them.Soldiers on both sides would know that these ambulances had injured men in them and would not attack them.It was not long before the Red Cross had hospitals on the battlefields(战地)and ships to carry the injured soldiers. Now they even have flying helicopters in the sky.

“No man is an island” is a well-known line from John Donne's Devotion, written more than three hundred years ago.Even now people still agree with him.No one can live a completely isolated life.Without other people, life became empty and sad.We all need friends.

For some of us, though making friends is not difficult, feeling shy, we may not want to make the first move.It is also difficult at times to keep the friends we already have.

There are many books about friendship, but Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People, written in 1936, is the most famous. This “how to” book about getting along with other people became a best-seller.It was later put into 28 languages.

Dale Carnegie's advice seems to be simple, but can his advice help you? Do you need to change the way you act? Here is the list of advice from his book.

1.Be friendly and polite.Always greet with a smile.Begin with “excuse me” or “would you please”, when you want to ask somebody.Remember to say “thank you” and try to be as helpful as you can.

2.Go out of your way to be nice.Find some time to do special things for other people.Making some soup for a sick neighbour may seem like a little thing to you, but it will make your neighbour feel a lot better.

3.Remember names. They say that the sweetest music to a person's ears is the sound of his or her own name.

4.Be open-minded.Try to understand other people's ways and ideas and learn something from them.

5.Listen patiently. When someone is talking to you, look at him or her, listen carefully and say something when necessary.

For hundreds Of years, scientists have been trying to answer what things have an effect on people's emotions(情感).How you feel is controlled by many things.Your emotions can be affected by your personality, by the actions of others and by events around you.Perhaps you don't know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.

People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a vitamin.Vitamins are natural chemicals(化学物质)which we all need to stay healthy.Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D.Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical affects our brains(大脑)and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway, so many people in these countries often feel sad.Without much sunlight, their bodies produce less vitamin D.Without enough vitamin D, their bodies make less of this special chemical which makes them feel good.To help the people in these countries feel better, special“sunrooms”with artificial(人造的)lights have been built.People can go there and get“sunlight”for an hour or two!

The weather can also affect people's emotions in other ways.Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot.In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unpleasant. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains.Through these ways, the weather can influence our emotions.Sadly, while the weather can change us, we can hardly change the weather.
