B China could become the first country to classify Internet addiction as a clinical disorder among growing concern over compulsive Web use by millions of Chinese. Users who spend six hours or more per day online, and show at least one symptom including difficulty in sleeping or concentrating, yearning to be online, anger, and mental or physical depression are classified as meeting the definition of addiction. Then how to treat Internet addiction? The treatment is similar to those for other addictions: Cutting off patients' connection with the Web before offering them psychological treatment; with group interactive activities to teach patients how to socialize in real society. China has the world's largest online population at 253 million people, according to official figures, and is growing rapidly as computer use rises along with income levels. But there has been growing concern over compulsive Internet use. A top Chinese legislator said in August that about 10 percent of China's Web users under the age of 18, or four million people, were addicted to the Internet, mainly to "unhealthy" online games. Recent research by Internet media company InterActiveCorp showed that 42 percent of Chinese youngsters polled felt "addicted" to the Web, compared to 18 percent in the United States. China's government has tried various measures to regulate the booming online gaming market and control Web use by teens. 60.
