People have been painting pictures for at least 30 000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill.Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there.Perhaps the painters thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals.Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.

About 5000 years ago, the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet.

The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic strip stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But, for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it.

By the year 1000 BC, people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign, or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letters of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and the Roman alphabet is now used all over the world. These days, we can write down a story, or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds:drawing, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere:in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work.

Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can make a story much more interesting.

阅读下列短文, 从所给的四个选项中, 选出最佳答案。

No form of thinking is more interesting than dreams. "Brain Wave"machines have shown that dreams last only two to ten seconds. Yetthey may tell a story that seems to take hours, or even days. Some dreams can be explained by feelings of the moment. A dry throat might make us dream about the Sahara (撒哈拉) Desert. The sudden buzzing (翁翁响) of a flying thing might become an airplane. Dreams can tell much more about people. Important dreams show our wishes or worries.Sometimes they are difficult to understand. An expert on dreams may find a struggle to get up a hill means that we are afraid that we will not reach our aims(目标).He may say that our dream about flying without wings means that we are tired of struggling and want to get away from it. Dreams of this kind are a normal way to ease (解除) our worries.

   (1)   "Brain Wave" machine may show __________.

[ ]

A. the last or two minutes of one's dream

Olaf Stapledon wrote a book called First and Last Men. in which he looked millions of years ahead. He
told of different men and of strange civilisations (文明), broken up by long 'dark ages' in between. In his
view, what is called the present time is no more than a moment in human history and we are just the First
Men. In 2,000 million years from now there will be the Eighteenth or Last Men.
However, most of our ideas about the future are really very short-sighted. Perhaps we can see some
possibilities for the next fifty years. But the next hundred? The next thousand? The next million? That's much
more difficult.
When men and women lived by hunting 50,000 years ago, how could they even begin to picture modern
life? Yet to men of 50,000 years from now, we may seem as primitive (原始的) in our ideas as the Stone-Age
hunters do to us. Perhaps through the cribe, These words, which I have just made up, have to stand for things
and ideas that we simply can't think of.
So why bother even to try imagining life far in the future? Here are two reasons. First unless we remember
how short our own lives are compared with the whole human history, we are likely to think our own interests
are much more important than they really are. If we make the earth a poor place to live because. we are
careless or greedy (贪婪) or quarrelsome. our grand-children will not bother to think of excuses for us.
Second, by trying to escape from present interests and imagine life far in the future, we may arrive at quite
fresh ideas that we can use ourselves. For example, if we imagine that in the future men may give up farming,
we can think of trying it now. So set you imagination free when you think about the future.
1. A particular mention made of Stapledon's book in the opening paragraph _______.
A. serves as a description of human history
B. serves an introduction to the discussion
C. shows a disagreement of views
D. Shows the popularity of the book
2. The text discusses men and women 50,000 years ago and 50,000 years from now
in order to show that ______.
A. human history is extremely long
B. life has changed a great deal
C. it is useless to plan for the next 50 years
D. it is difficult to tell what will happen in the future
3. Spundels and ballalators are used in the text to refer to _______.
A. tools used in farming
B. ideas about modern life
C. unknown things in the future
D. hunting skills in the Stone Age
4. According to the writer of the text, imagining the future will _______.
A. serve the interests of the present and future generations
B. enable us to better understand human history
C. help us to improve farming
D. make life worth living

Britons Learn to Forgive

LEEDS, England ─ A Leeds University psychology (心理学) professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies.

“The hatred we hold within us is a cancer,” Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

More than 70 people have become members in Hart’s first 20-week workshop in London ─ a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.

These are people who are sick and tired of living with a memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian-born Hart.

The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every fortnight.

The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hatred in these people. “People have lots of negative attitudes towards forgiveness,” he said, “People confuse forgiveness with forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one.”

Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed.

“The main idea is to give you guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitudes towards the person you are angry with,” said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project.

Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people “want to get free of the past”.
