Can 13-year-olds do something to change the world? Cris Kesz Valdez, 13, from the Philippines believes so.

At the age of 7, Valdez set up an organization to give homeless kids things like slippers and toothbrushes. So far he has helped more than 10,000 children improve their lives in his hometown.

Valdez won the 2012 International Children’s Peace Prize on September 19, 2012.

“My motto is ‘we can change the world one heart at a time,’ ” Valdez said at the award ceremony.

In fact, Valdez is a homeless kid himself. He looked for food from trash, lived on the streets and slept in a public cemetery for most of his childhood. His parents didn’t care about him and often beat him. Valdez said he felt he was living in “darkness” at that time.

But this “darkness” didn’t turn him into a dark person. Valdez got help from community workers. On his first birthday party, at the age of 7, Valdez decided what he wanted most was to help other children who were still living on the streets.

“I didn’t have a lot of money, but I had a lot of love to give,” Valdez explained.

That day was the birth of the organization, Championing Community Children. Since then, Valdez and his friends visit homeless children and hand out bags with slippers, toys and even candy. They nurse their wounds, teach them about their rights and offer them hope.

“I want children on the streets to get the same chance as I have,” he said.

“Well, we're in our new house. Let's get a new pet to get along with it,” Mrs. Brown said to her husband.” That sounds like a pretty good idea,” he answered. “Do you want to see the ads in the newspaper?” “No. Let's go to the animal shelter. Many pets there need homes. Since tomorrow is Saturday, we can both go,” she said.
The next morning the Browns met Mr Snow at the animal shelter. “We want to be sure that the pets here go to good homes,” Mr Snow said, “So I need to ask you some questions.”
After they talked for a while, the Browns decided to get a small dog. It wouldn't need a big house or a big yard. A small dog would bark(吠)and warn them if someone tried to break into their house. “Do you like my dress?” She asked a lady. “My Mum made it just for me,” she said with tears in her eyes.

“Well, I think it’s very pretty, so tell me, little girl, why are you crying?”

The little girl answered in a low voice, “After Mum made me this dress, she went away. My Dad says that she’s up in heaven with grandfather.”

Finally the woman realized why she was crying. She felt very sorry for the little girl and held the child in her arms.

Just before the lady wanted to go, the girl stopping crying, walked back from the woman, and showed her a spot (点) on her dress, and said, “Right here is where my Mum kissed my dress, and here,” pointing to another spot, “and here is another kiss, and here, and here. Mum said that she had put all those kisses on my dress so that I would forget my sadness.”

阅读短文,完成下面句子,每空一词。

In the 21st century classroom, modern technology has made our learning experience more interesting. Also, it’s more interactive(互动的).

Now three kinds of tools in the 21st century classroom---a whiteboard, a computer screen and some audio tools(音频工具) are available. They have made a big difference in how students learn. An interactive whiteboard allows the teacher to show pictures and provide sound as well. A large computer screen has colorful pictures and sound in it. So lots of students’ attention is attracted by what they see and hear. Different kinds of audio tools, such as earphones and microphone, also help to make sure that everyone can hear the teacher. In the past, if a child missed some of what the teacher said, the child may have been too nervous to ask the teacher to repeat it. Now the students are not likely to miss what the teacher says with these audio tools.

The 21st century classroom is able to teach students more than one thing. Just imagine an English lesson is given in a modern classroom like this. How would it be different from a classroom in the past? The answer is simple. The students would learn about not only the subject itself but also how to use the modern machines.

The 21st century classroom can make teaching and learning easier. Now everyone is able to express their opinions or answer questions without having to speak loud. Since everyone can do it, the teacher can easily see who needs more help in other ways.

It’s clear that the 21st century classroom is really making a great difference.

1.Modern technology has made our learning experience more _________ and the technology is also more __________.

2.An interactive whiteboard can provide not only __________but also_________.

3.A computer screen with pictures and sound in it can attract students’_________, and there is less chance of ________ what the teacher says.

4.In a modern classroom, students can learn about both the _________itself and the use of _____________.

5.This passage mainly talks about audio tools like _________ and _________.
