Every one needs friends. We all like to feel close(亲密的)to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do so many things together with.Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.

No two people are the same.Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends.Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad.We miss them very much. But we can call them and write to them.Maybe we would never see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them.Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way.So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.

There’s more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those who don’t have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier.Being happy helps you stay well.Or it could be just knowing that someone cares about you.If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

Tattoos(纹身)and body piercings(穿洞)have moved up on the trend list in recent years.Around Western schools lots of teens are sporting new holes and flesh ink.Like all other subjects, we'll surely be faced with such situation. To get a better view of what has happened in the West, let's sit down and hear what they say.

  Kerstin Otto from Washington:

The hotter it gets and the more layers of clothing disappear, the more tattoos and piercings appear on various places of the human body, I wouldn't be caught dead with a snake tattooed on my ankle or with a piece of metal stuck in my belly button.

  Erin from Indiana:

I think body piercing is cool.In most situations, you don't really have to worry about it getting torn out.I go to Noblesville High School.I am a sophomore(that is the l0th grade).Body piercing can be cool, only if it is not taken to too much of an extent.I would not want to get my nose pierced, just because I think I'll look bad.But that is my personal opinion.I guess that type of thing is a cultural difference.

  Tiara from Indiana:

I personally think body piercing is sickening. If there were supposed to be holes in your body, you would have been born with them.I do, however, think that ear piercing, is not wrong. There is a difference between ear piercing and belly button piercing.Ear piercing is not nearly as dangerous.I would be sick if someone stuck a needle in my belly button.

  Lee from Illinois:

Hi!I live in Illinois.I am 23.I have 12 tattoos and three piercings.I love my tattoos and consider myself an art collector. You would be surprised at who has given me the thumbs-up on my art work.People on the street stop me to look at that on my leg. Most of them don't know what it is.They just think the work itself is great.

  Subotai from California:

I'm not prohibitive(禁止)of self-expression, but when I see high school students getting these piercings, I really wonder. In some cases, the drive is deeper and darker than mere fashion.A friend of mine tried piercing her own tongue with a safety pin.It got infected and she had a tongue the size of a cow's.

  Nagib from Washington:

I wanted an earring. My friends had them and it looked like a cool thing.I wanted to get a nose ring, but my mum wouldn't let me.Now I'm glad I didn't get it.I just wanted a little stud, but I wouldn't have looked good with it.

  Jackson from Ohio:

I don't think it's wrong, but when people do it all over the place like their face and everything -I think that's ridiculous.People who get the big dragons that cover your whole body-I don't think that's necessary. When I see naked chicks on guys, I think.“You have no respect for women.”

  Brittney from New York:

You don't want to do stuff to your body. You don t need to do that because you were made perfect. You don't need to add piercings. If it will make you feel beautiful and you really feel like you need to do it for yourself, then okay.If it really makes a big difference impacting your self-esteem and how you are towards others, then do it.But otherwise, don't mess with what you got.Maybe you should try something more substantial(充实的)to find beauty in yourself.

(1)

Who is wholeheartedly lost in tattoos and piercing?

[ ]

A.

Tiara

B.

Erin

C.

Nagib.

D.

Lee.

(2)

Who doesn't think tattoos and piercing are beautiful?

[ ]

A.

Jackson.

B.

Brittney.

C.

Tiara.

D.

Nagib.

(3)

We can conclude that ________.

[ ]

A.

tattoos and piercing are a new kind of elegant art

B.

all the teachers in the West are in favor of tattoos and piercing

C.

everything is changeable with time going on

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

How often do you travel by plane?

How much electricity do you use?

These days everyone is worried about the size of their carbon footprint. In order to reduce global warming we need to make our carbon footprints smaller. But how much CO2 are we responsible for?

A new book by Mike Berners Lee(a leading expert in carbon footprint)might be able to help. How bad are bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything looks at the different things we do and buy, and calculates the amount of CO2 all of the following created: the ingredients, the electricity used in the brewery, the equipment, the travel and commuting of the beer, and the packaging. It's amazing how many different things need to be included in each calculation. And it's frightening how much carbon dioxide everything produces.

But all of this can help us decide which beer to drink. From Berners-Lee's calculations, it's clear that a pint(568ml)of locally-brewed beer has a smaller carbon footprint than a bottle of imported beer. This is because the imported beer has been transported from far away, and it uses more packaging. The local beer only produces 300g of CO2, but the imported beer produces 900g! So, one pint of local beer is better for the environment than three cans of cheap foreign lager from the supermarket.

Berners-Lee has even calculated the carbon footprint of cycling to work.Nothing is more environmentally-friendly than riding a bike, surely? Well, it depends on what you've had to eat before. To ride a bike we need energy and for energy we need food.So if we eat a banana and then ride a kilometer and a half, our footprint is 65g of CO2.However, if we eat bacon before the bike ride, it's 200g.In fact, bananas are good in general because they don't need packaging, they can be transported by boat and they grow in natural sunlight.

So, does this mean that cycling is bad for the environment? Absolutely not, for a start, if you cycle, you don't use your car, and the fewer cars on the road, the fewer traffic jams. And cars in traffic jams produce three times more CO2 than cars traveling at speed.Cycling also makes you healthy and less likely to go to a hospital. And hospitals have very big carbon footprints!

So maybe it's time for us all to start making some changes.Pass me a banana and a pint of local beer, please.

(1)

According to Berners-Lee, which of the following produces the most carbon dioxide?

On the whole, it's not something we parents shout about, but one in four of us does it.Hiring private tutors(指老师)for our children is now widespread. And this year, as always, the Easter holidays will be peak time(高峰期) for tutor demand.

“My husband and I tried to tutor her at home, but we found all our knowledge was out of date and we were only confusing Zarreen. We also tried a group revision course but all the children were sitting exams for different boards(入学考试). On the whole we think one-two-one tuition works best and it is worth the money. In our case,Preeta is a bit like an elder sister to Zarreen and that's the most important,”says Ashan Sabri from London, whose daughter Zarreen,18,is having tuition in biology and chemistry in preparation for A-levels this summer.

In fact,Preeta Datta is only six years older than her pupil and she is happy to provide extra tuition through mobile phone.“Maybe Zarreen will call me two or three times a week with a question about biology or chemistry, and that's fine to me,”says Datta.

The real question is:does tutoring do any good?

“It's not the magic bullet,”says Professor Judith Ireson.‘It's still up to the child to do the learning. If he or she isn't interested, then sending them to a private tutor won't do any good.”

In which case, surely it's time to break open the Champagne(香槟酒)?Not necessarily, says Elaine Tyrrell, head of the Rowans School.

“While we recommend private tutoring for a few children whose first language isn't English,we don't encourage it for the others,”says Tyrrell.“With the level of education they get here, children really ought to be able to pass the entrance exams without any extra teaching. Besides, our biggest worry is that they might just get in with the help of last-minute tutoring, but, once they actually get to that school, they won't be able to manage.”

It's a point worth considering. After all,who would want their child to stay at the bottom of the class?

A.children may be misled by private tutors

B.the quality of private tutoring may be poor

C.the education that children receive in class is enough for them

D.children may not have the real ability to deal with their further studies

59.What attitude does the author hold towards home tutoring?

  English as a Foreign Language

Who taught you to speak English? Your parents, while you were a young child? Your teachers at school? Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an understanding of what is rapidly becoming a truly global language.

There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English.

Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures(文化)?Or should we worry about the dangers of ‘mono-centralism’, a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?

Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary(相反),I would have thought-although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India(where many of them speak at least some English)and Pakistan(the same situation with India)…

If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonalds burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位的), it will kill other languages ? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well.

When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in Ireland. “The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it’s like a rose,” he said. “But who would ever want their garden just full of roses?”

Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don’t necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that’s fine by me.

67.By saying “Ask the people of India…and Pakistan”(in Paragraph 4), the author is trying to show that _____.

A.speaking the same language doesn’t necessarily bring peace

B.wars can destroy the relationship between two countries

C.English doesn’t kill other languages

D.English is widely used in the world

68.What does “garden” in the last two paragraphs stand for?

A.Language B. Family C. The world D. The Earth

69.The author would probably agree that ______.

A.it’s very hard to plant many kinds of flowers in a garden

B.it’s good for people from other countries to learn English

C.more and more people like to plant roses in their gardens

D.English is easier to learn than other languages

70.This passage is mainly about ________.

A.why English has become a global language

B.how many people in the world speak English

C.how people in the world learn English as a foreign language

D.whether we need to worry about English being a world language
