( B ) By almost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. In just a few years, 34 percent of American universities have begun offering some form of distance learning (DL), and among the larger schools, it's close to 90 percent. If you doubt the popularity of the trend, you probably haven't heard of the University of Phoenix. It grants degrees entirely on the basis of online instruction. While the kinds of instruction offered in these programs will differ, DL usually signifies a course in which the instructors post syllabi , reading assignment, and schedules on Websites, and students send in their assignments by e-mail. Generally speaking, face-to-face communication with an instructor is minimized or eliminated altogether. The attraction for students might at first seem obvious. Primarily, there's the convenience promised by courses on the Net: you can do the work, as they say, in your pajamas . But figures indicate that the reduced effort results in a reduced commitment to the course. While dropout rate for all freshmen at American universities is around 20 percent, the rate for online students is 35 percent. Students themselves seem to understand the weaknesses inherent in the setup. In a survey conducted for eCornell, the DL division of Cornell University, less than a third of the respondents expected the quality of the online course to be as good as the classroom course. Clearly, from the schools' perspective, there's a lot of money to be saved. The more students who enroll in a course but don't come to campus, the more school saves on keeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers. 68. What is the most striking feature of the University of Phoenix? A. It boasts the largest number of students on campus. B. All its courses are offered online. C. Its online courses are of the poor quality. D. Someone taking its online courses is likely to get a degree. 69. According to the passage, distance learning is basically characterized by . A. a minimum or total absence of face-to-face instruction B. a considerable flexibility in its academic requirements C. the great diversity of students’ academic backgrounds D. the casual relationship between students and professors 70. What explains the high drop-out rates for online students? A. There is no mechanism to ensure that they make the required effort. B. There is strict control over the academic standards of the courses. C. The evaluation system used by online universities is not weak. D. Lack of classroom interaction reduces the effectiveness of instruction. 71. According to the passage, universities show great enthusiasm for DL programs for the purpose of . A. building up their reputation B. upgrading their teaching facilities C. providing convenience for students D. cutting down on their expenses 查看更多

About a year ago, I went to stay at a Detroit hotel. I didn’t want to carry too much money with me, so I asked the desk clerk(职员) to put a hundred dollar bill in the safe for me.

The next morning, however, the clerk said that he knew nothing about my money. I didn’t have any proof(证据) that I had given the man the money. There was clearly nothing left to do but to go to the nearest lawyer.

The lawyer advised me to return to the hotel with him and give another hundred-dollar bill to the desk. So we did. An hour later, I went back to the desk and asked for my money. Since I had the lawyer as an eyewitness to the second hundred-dollar bill, the clerk could not say he knew nothing about it.

Another hour later, I put the second part of the lawyer’s plan into action. This time both the lawyer and I went to the hotel to ask for the hundred-dollar bill once again. And when the clerk insisted that he had given it to me, I said it was not true. The lawyer said to him, “ I saw this gentleman give you a hundred-dollar bill. If you don’t hand it in immediately, I will be forced to call the policeman.” The clerk realized he had been cheated, so he gave me back the first hundred-dollar bill.

“I don’t know how to thank you enough for getting my money back.” I said to the lawyer. And what do you suppose he answered? He said, “oh, don’t thank me. That will be one hundred dollars, please.”

(E)
Everybody has to buy or sell things sometimes. Even students, who are usually not very rich, have to learn something about making purchases(买东西) intelligently. As a student you may find, for example that you need to buy a walkman or winter clothing. You may want to buy a television or a used car. Of course, you want to get good value for your money. If you are considering a major purchase, or any purchase, you should remember several important things.
◎Study first, and then decide what you want to buy. You can learn a lot just by reading books and advertisements.
Remember that a high quality product will probably last longer and work better. Of course,
for a superior(优良的) product you are expected to pay more. An inferior product may not give you the same quality, but the price should be low. Perhaps this seems obvious, but you know the quality. Don’t just look at the price. A poor quality product could be expensive. And a valuable one could be on sale at a greatly reduced price.
◎Don’t hurry. Take your time. After you decide what product you want, go to many different stores. If you cannot find the product you want, you may try to order it directly form the factory or ask the store to order it for you.
Look for a good deal. If you wait, you will probably find that your product will go on sale and
you may be able to save 10,20,or even 50 percent of the original price.
◎Finally, before you buy, make sure that the product is guaranteed(质量保证). If you find the lowest possible price, you will generally be happy with your purchase and also keep more money in the bank.
73. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. What products are of high quality   B. Do shopping wisely as a student
