His father died when George was eleven and he did not attend school regularly, but he acquired basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills. He did not attend university. When he was 16, George moved to Lawrence’s estate, Mount Vernon, and ten years later, he married a young widow, Martha, and adopted her two children. Washington had no children of his own. George received his first military appointment as a major in the militia during the French and Indian War . In 1758 Washington was elected to the House of Burgesses and expressed his opposition to Britain’s unfair taxes and land laws. He was active in resisting British rule. When the Revolutionary War began the Continental Congress asked George Washington to be the commander in chief of the Continental army. With a force of about 10,000 men, he faced a difficult winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. They had little food and were poorly clothed. Those who survived until spring were pleased to learn that France had recognized America’s independence. With aid from France, the troops were able to trap the main British force at Yorktown . After the war, Washington returned home to Mount Vernon. George Washington was a member of the Federalist Party, believing in a strong central American government. His popularity caused him to be elected president of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and in 1789 he became the first president of the United States. He was elected to a second term, with John Adams serving as vice president. He refused to run for a third term as president. He died on December 14, 1799, of a throat infection brought on by several hours outside in a freezing rain. He is buried in the family tomb at Mount Vernon. 【查看更多】
