For many years, scientists have warned that smoking tobacco is bad for health. Yet people around the world continue to smoke. The World Health Organization estimates that more than four million people die each year from the effects of smoking. That number is increasing.
Scientists have identified more than forty chemicals in tobacco smoke that cause cancer in humans and animals. Nicotine (尼古丁) is the major poison in cigarettes that gives pleasure to smokers. The American Cancer Society says nicotine can kill a person when taken in large amounts. It does this by stopping the muscles used for breathing. Also, studies have found that nicotine can be as harmful as alcohol or the illegal drugs. So experts say it is better never to start smoking and become dependent on nicotine than it is to smoke with the idea of stopping later.
Smoking tobacco is the leading cause of lung disease. Smoking also has been linked to heart disease, stroke and many kinds of cancer. American government health experts say smoking affects not only the smoker. Tobacco smoke also affects the health of people who do not smoke. Smokers may harm the health of family members and people at work. Tobacco smoke causes an estimated 3,000 non-smoking Americans to die of lung cancer each year.
Therefore, it can be seen that smoking begins to cause damage immediately. All cigarettes can damage the body. And there is no safe way to smoke.

Then, consider this: you might be in a state of sub-health(亚健康). Sub-health, also called the third state or gray state, is explained as a borderline(界限)state between health and disease.
According to the survey by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of sub-healthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam-week.
Symptoms include a lack of energy, depression, slow reactions, insomnia, anger, and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.
The key to preventing and recovering from sub-health, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities.
As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements -- vitamins and other elements that are important to the body.
Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract(消化道). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding sub-health.
