When I was 8 years old, I once decided to run away from home. With my suitcase   36  and some sandwiches in a bag, I started for the front door and said to Mom, “I’m leaving.”
“If you want to   37 , that’s all right,” she said. “But you came into this home without anything and you can leave the same way.” I   38  my suitcase and sandwiches on the floor heavily and started for the door again.
“Wait a minute,” Mom said. “I want your   39  back. You didn’t wear anything when you arrived.” This really angered me. I tore my clothes off—shoes, socks, underwear and all—and   40 , “Can I go now?” “Yes,” Mom answered, “but once you close that door, don’t expect to come back.”
I was so   41  that I slammed (砰地关上) the door and stepped out on the front porch.   42  I realized that I was outside, with nothing on. Then I noticed that down the street, two neighbor girls were walking toward our house. I ran to   43  behind a big tree in our yard at once. After a while, I was   44  the girls had passed by. I dashed to the front door and banged on it loudly.
“Who’s there?” I heard.
“It’s Billy! Let me in!”
The voice behind the   45  answered, “Billy doesn’t live here anymore. He ran away from home.” Glancing behind me to see if anyone else was coming, I begged, “Aw, c’mon, Mom! I’m   46  your son. Let me in!”
The door inched open and Mom’s smiling face appeared. “Did you change your   47  about running away?” she asked.
“What’s for supper?” I answered. (277 words)

A 7.0 magnitude(级)earthquake killed more than 230,000 people in Haiti. Then an 8.8 magnitude quake killed more than 900 people in Chile. And few weeks later, a 6.0 magnitude quake struck rural eastern Turkey, killing at least 57 people.
The earthquakes kept coming hard and fast.   1 It’s not. The problem is what’s happening above ground, not underground, experts say.
2 They’re rapidly putting up buildings that can’t stand up to earth quakes, scientists believe.
And news reports and better earthquake monitoring make it seem as if earth quakes are increasing all the time.
On average, there are 134 earthquakes a year that have a magnitude between 6.0 and 6.9. So far this year there have been 40 earthquakes—more than in most years for that time period. But that’s because the 8.8 quake in Chile caused a large number of strong aftershocks.
Also, it’s not the number of quakes, but their destructive effects that gain attention. The death is largely due to building standards,   3  Paul Earle, a US seismologist, called for better building standards in the world’s big cities.
Of the 130 cities worldwide with populations of more than I million, more than half are likely to be hit by earthquakes.   4 “If you have a problem feeding yourself, you’re not really going to worry about earthquakes,” said Paul.
The earthquakes made everyone start to think   5  “People are paying attention to the violent planet we’re always lived on. Come back an another six moths if there has been no earthquakes, most people will have forgotten it again,” said US disaster researcher Dennis Mileti.

A.But it won’t last.
B.More people are moving into big cities.
C.Earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do.
D.There have been more deaths overt the past decade from earthquakes.
E.Many people began to wonder if something terrible is happening underground.
F.While it seems as if the are more earthquakes occurring, there really aren’t.
G.But developing nations with growing populations don’t pay attention to earthquake preparedness.

“This is the emergency room calling and your son was just  36 in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms.We have called for a(n)  37  and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college,so we knew immediately this was  38
The doctor described the  39 ,which caused the burns. At 6 am,our son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they   40  the charcoal(木炭),it burst into flames because they had sprayed too much gasoline(petrol). The flames  41 my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his head.

After he  45 from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery(整容)for 6 months  46 it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking and wrinkling. So,he had to return to college with scars typical of severe burns.
When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch, very 47__ scar on her arm,“Nancy,if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it.It does not mean they will not  48 it,but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.’’
I  49 this wisdom on to my son.He took my advice to 50 and returned to school with his head held high--glad he was alive.
By the end of the six-month waiting period,he decided that the scars did not  51 , sohe made the  52 to give up any plastic surgery.
We all have “scars” that we believe  53 people to keep away from us.And we spend a lot of time thinking that if only we looked different,or dressed differently, people would like us better.
But you see, people will only judge you by your looks,or your clothes,if you are judging yourself by these same  54 standards.Put your imperfections out of your mind and concentrate on what you value  55 yourself,and your beauty will shine through.

More than 6,000 children were expelled (开除) from US school last year for bringing guns and bombs to school, the US Department of Education said on May 8.

The department gave a report to the expulsions (开除) as saying handguns accounted for 58 percent of the 6,093 expulsions in 1996—1997, against 7 percent for rifles (步枪) or shotguns and 35 percent for other types of firearms.

“The report is a clear sign that our nation’s public schools are cracking down (严惩) on students who bring guns to school,” Education Secretary Richard Riley said in a statement. “We need to be tough-minded about keeping guns out of our schools and do everything to keep our children safe.”

In March 1997, an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy using handguns and rifles shot dead four children and a teacher at a school in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In October, two students were killed and seven wounded in a shooting at a Mississippi school. Two months later, a 14-year-old boy killed three high school students and wounded five in Dasucah, Kentucky.

Most of the expulsions, 56 percent, were from high schools, which have students from about age 13. 34 percent were from junior high schools and 9 percent were from elementary schools, the report said.
