Babies are not just passing idle time when they stare goggle-eyed at the television—they are actually learning about the world, U.S. researchers said. Parents may want t limit what their babies see on television , based on the study, said Donna Mumme, assistant professor of psychology at Tufts University in Boston, who led the research. “Children as young as 12 months are making decisions based n the emotional(情感的)reactions of adults around them,” Mumme said in a statement. “It turns out they can also use emotional information they pick up from television. This means that adults might want to think twice before they speak in a loud and harsh voice or let a baby see television programs meant for information about the world. A mother urging her baby to eat some  “yummy” soup on a brother crying in fear when a dog approaches can influence a baby’s reaction. Mumme’s team tested babies to determine. If television has the same influence, showing actors reacting on a videotape to objects such as red spiral letter holder, a blue humpy ball, and a yellow garden hose attachment. Babies aged 10 months or 12 months were later given the same objects to play with. Ten-month-olds did not seem to e influenced by the video buy the 1-year-olds were. When the actors acted neutrally or positively to an object, the babies happily played with them. But if the actor had seemed afraid or disgusted, the babies would avoid the object.

We would probably all be amazed if we watched a videotape of ourselves performing basically unconscious acts as we go about the business of the day. These unconscious acts consist of all the little personal habits that we don’t even think about, but definitely should. These are some of the things that present an image of who we are to others, and if we are careless in performing them, this image may well be other than we would like it to be.

Parents who insist that their children practice good manners and habits at home are doing them a great service, for these habits then become lifelong and the natural way they do things. It proves true that their unconscious actions will reflect a well-mannered person.

People who, for example, eat with both arms on the table at home will likely do so when out. Those who are lazy and slow in private will certainly be so in public. Children who are permitted to be disrespectful to their parents will follow suit with other adults, and will, most likely, become adults who are disrespectful of others. This is an area where the saying “practice makes perfect” may be applied.

There is an article about the actress, Audrey Hepburn, known for her beautiful carriage and posture. According to her biographer, her grandmother tied her neck to the back of her chair, at table, so that she would not drop down suddenly over her food, but rather would learn to put only small amounts of food on her spoon or fork and bring them to her mouth. This is a rather extreme “at home” method for the development of erect (直立的) posture, but it does illustrate the effectiveness of practicing good habits so that, when in public, they are instinctive.

1.Which of the following expresses the main idea of the passage?

A.Parents should be responsible for their children’s good habits.

B.The actress is well known for her beautiful posture.

C.We should always be aware of our manners.

D.Without good manners, one can never be perfect.

2. Those who eat with both arms on the table at home ______.

A.will probably change the habit when eating out with their relatives

B.will probably have the same habit when they have meals in the restaurant

C.will feel embarrassed when having meals with so many strangers in public

D.will always put their arms on the table no matter where they eat

3. The meaning of “practice makes perfect” in the third paragraph is ______.

A.the more practice one has, the better job he will do

B.the more perfect one is, the more practice he needs

C.if one has enough practice, he will become perfect

D.perfect makes a person practice more

4.Which of the following are NOT true?

A.If we are not careful about our unconscious acts, the images of ourselves presented to others will be quite undesirable.

B.The good habits formed in one’s childhood will benefit him throughout his life.

C.If parents do not care about the disrespectful attitude adopted by their children towards themselves, their children might be disrespectful to others.

D.It is unlikely that a well-mannered person will not embarrass himself in public.

Most people who enjoy movies do not really care how they are made. They want to enjoy a good story. Movie producer and director George Lucas wants people to see the best-made movie possible. So, his latest Star Wars movie was made without using film.

“Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” was made using digital cameras. A digital camera does not use traditional film. It captures an image on videotape. The images recorded on videotape are then placed in a computer.

George Lucas says that using digital cameras permits him to have much more control over the final product. For example, the image can be changed after it is placed in a computer. An expert can change color, add or take out objects, add people or beings who are not real.

Much of what is seen in the new “Star Wars” movie is not real. Huge

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150个词左右的英语短文。

Happiness cannot last forever and it may be due to everything from the weather to the size of your bank account.

We’re not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to get out of the path of anxiety, anger and sadness into a state of happiness once or even several throughout the day.

Practice mindfulness. Be in the moment. Instead of worrying about your family, focus on the here and now----the food, the company, and the conversation.

Laugh out loud. Researchers at the University of California Irvine, tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it. They started experiencing biological changes right away. When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones (激素) dropped significantly.

Make a list. There’s nothing like writing down your tasks to help you organize your thoughts and calm your anxiety. Checking off each item provides a great sense of fulfillment.
