Our risk of cancer rises dramatically as we age. So it makes sense that the elderly should be routinely screened for new tumors — or doesn’t it?

While such vigilant(警觉的)tracking of cancer is a good thing in general, researchers are increasingly questioning whether all of this testing is necessary for the elderly. With the percentage of people over age 65 expected to nearly double by 2050, it’s important to weigh the health benefits of screening against the risks and costs of routine testing.

In many cases, screening can lead to additional biopsies and surgeries to remove cancer, which can cause side effects, while the cancers themselves may be slow-growing and may not pose serious health problems in patients’ remaining years. But the message that everyone must screen for cancer has become so ingrained that when health care experts recommended that women under 50 and over 74 stop screening for breast cancer, it caused a riotous reaction among doctors, patients and advocacy groups.

It’s hard to uproot deeply held beliefs about cancer screening with scientific data. Certainly, there are people over age 75 who have had cancers detected by routine screening, and gained several extra years of life because of treatment. And clearly, people over age 75 who have other risk factors for cancer, such as a family history or prior personal experience with the disease, should continue to get screened regularly. But for the remainder, the risk of cancer, while increased at the end of life, must be balanced with other factors like remaining life expectancy(预期寿命).

A recent study suggests that doctors start to make more objective decisions about who will truly benefit from screening- especially considering the explosion of the elderly that will soon swell our population.

It’s not an easy calculation to make, but one that make sense for the whole patient. Dr. Otis Brawley said, “Many doctors are ordering these tests purely to cover themselves. We need to think about the rational use of health care and stop talking about the rationing of health care.”

That means making some difficult decisions with elderly patients, and going against the misguided belief that when it comes to health care, more is always better.

1.Why do doctors recommend routine cancer screening for elderly people?

A. It is believed to contribute to long life.

B. It is part of their health care package.

C. The elderly are more sensitive about their health.

D. The elderly are in greater danger of tumor growth.

2.How do some researchers now look at routine cancer screening for the elderly?

A. It adds too much to their medical bills.

B. It helps increase their life expectancy.

C. They are doubtful about necessity.

D. They think it does more than good.

3.What is the conventional view about women screening for breast cancer?

A. It applies to women over 50.

B. It is a must for adult women.

C. It is optional for young women.

D. It doesn’t apply to women over 74.

4.Why do many doctors prescribe routine screening for cancer?

A. They want to protect themselves against medical disputes.

B. They want to take advantage of the medical care system.

C. They want data for medical research.

D. They want their patients to suffer less.

5.What does the author say is the general view about health care?

A. The more, the better.

B. Prevention is better than cure.

C. Better early than late.

D. Better care, longer life.

A new U.S.government report says more than two million Americans fall ill each year with drug—resistant bacterial infections(感染),and 23,000 of them are dying as a result. The head of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention[CDC]said that the number probably will grow.Officials warn that steps must be taken now to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotic(抗生素)drugs.

Without urgent action to stop that trend, warned Tom Frieden whose agency wrote the report, the miracle drugs to fight them won’t be available in the future.

“If we are not careful, the medicine chest will be empty when we go there to look for a lifesaving antibiotic for someone with a deadly infection. But if we act now,we can preserve these medications while we continue to work on development of new medicines.”

The report names a drug—resistant abuse of gonorrhea(淋病),which causes about one quarter of a million hospitalizations in the United States annually.Of the number at least 1 4,000 result in death.

Drug resistance develops through the overuse and inappropriate use of anti—bacterial agents. These can be:doctors prescribing(开药) them to patients who have viral infections that are not affected by medicine meant to fight bacteria;patients not taking all of their medicine as prescribed,so the bacteria making them sick are only weakened, not killed;antibiotic use in healthy farm animals to prevent illness and promote growth.Antibiotic remainders left in meat and animal products can then lead to drug resistance in humans.

To limit the spread of resistant infections, experts recommend wider use of routine immunizations(预防),as well as hand—washing in hospitals and other health care facilities. Also, the report urges hand—washing by food handlers.?

Michael Bell, deputy director of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at CDC,said Patients also can play a role in preserving the effectiveness of antibiotics by asking health care providers a few simple questions.

1.What’s the best title of the passage?

A.Drug Resistance Developing Quickly in the US

B.Drug—Resistant Bacterial Infections Growing in the US

C.Actions for Preserving Anti-Bacterial Medications in the US

D.Preventions of Drug-resistant Bacterial Infections in the US

2.According to Frieden,we must take measures without delay to preserve effectiveness of antibiotics,or_____.

A.we will have to develop better medicines in place of antibiotics

B.there may be no effective anti-bacterial drugs for use in the future

C.we can’t find other medicines to cure serious illnesses in the future

D.more and more Americans will suffer from bacterial infections each year

3.Of those patients admitted to the hospital because of a drug-resistant abuse of gonorrhea annually, deaths add up to_____.

A.at least 5.6%  B.about 25%    C.about 1.4%    D.at least 2.5%

Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or sleep restfully. It is a problem to nearly everyone at some time .A person may be awake for an hour in the middle of the night and then , next morning, feel that he hardly sleep all night Normally, worry about not getting enough sleep is the worst aspect of most insomnia. If insomnia is recurrent, however, it is important to find its causes and try to correct them, with the help of a doctor if necessary.

Any of a large number of simple factors may take it difficult for someone to fall asleep or remain asleep. His matters may be too soft or too hard. If there are too many blankets on a hot night, he may be too warm; if the bedclothes are too light he may feel cold during the night. If it is not dark enough, or too noisy, this may cause difficulty in sleeping. Eating shortly before going to bed also be responsible for insomnia. Stimulating drinks, such as tea or coffee, can also keep people awake.

Inability to fall asleep is sometimes a symptom of emotional or mental disorders. Insomnia may also be caused by pain and, very rarely, it can be a symptom of a physical disease.

The cause of insomnia may be easy to correct. The sufferer should check the mattress, bedclothes and bedroom temperature, and make any necessary changes. An eye mask keeps out the night and ear-plugs shut out sound. He should relax for an hour or two before bedtime, perhaps by reading a book; watching TV, or taking a warm bath. If he wakes during the night he should try turning on the light and reading for a while. Taking warm milk and a biscuit or two may be helpful. Above all, he should try not to worry about sleeplessness when someone is tied enough he nearly always falls asleep.

If necessary, a doctor may prescribe tranquillizers or sleeping pills. Take only the dosage he prescribes; any more is dangerous.

阅读短文,根据所读内容在文后1-10的空格里填上适当的单词或短语,每空不超过三个单词。

Everybody has lied on some occasion in life. However, compulsive(上瘾的)lying is different. A compulsive liar has no control over his lying habit. It is very uncomfortable for him to speak the truth. He lies on both major and small issues. Compulsive liars lie out of habit and even on issues where lying does not benefit them. A compulsive liar is also called a habitual liar.

A compulsive liar is not nervous at times. He lies with strong self-confidence. However, you could find evidence that he is lying, which is easy because he always lies. If a person tries to speak out irrelevant details or offer explanations which aren’t necessary when he’s asked a particular question, he’s attempting to hide certain facts. Also you can look at his body language for signs of lying. If he has crossed his arms he might be hiding certain facts from you. If he is blinking(眨眼)frequently then chances are high he is lying. Another sign is he will never admit the truth even when faced with strong evidence.

The consequence of compulsive lying is that no one trusts him any more. It could have far reaching consequences on his job, relationships and friends. It is a terrible cycle, which can alienate(疏远)the very people who are dear to him.

The cure for this condition is that the person affected should take the initiative. He has to meet a psychologist and/ or a psychiatrist(精神病医生). The psychiatrist will prescribe the needed medicine. The psychologist will analyze why this behavior is happening. Hypnosis(催眠)is a possible solution to this problem. Fortunately this is a treatable condition.
