12、    If you are like many people, you enjoy sports in your leisure time. Many of us watch sports on TV, go to games and meets, and play tennis or golf in the time left after school or work. We may even chat about sports on the Internet. Many observers note that sports reinforce(加强;增强)norms and values important to society, like competition and teamwork. Sports metaphors, such as "There is no I in TEAM," teach us that success is achieved by putting the group above individual glory. Slogans like "Winners never quit and quitters never win" reinforce values of competition and working hard to get ahead.

Nevertheless, organized sports have been criticized for several things. One is that they encourage potentially harmful male aggression.  Another is that they direct minority students, particularly African American males, toward athletics--instead of academics--as a road to success.  However, only a very small minority of high school athletes are able to support themselves through athletics. In fact, according to one estimate, only one of 12,000 high school athletes will earn money as a professional athlete; among those who make it, the average professional career lasts only three years. Nevertheless, the importance of sports in teaching and reinforcing norms and values, along with the role of sports in symbolizing and integrating communities, are important reasons why nearly every nation has encouraged athletics.

64. What's the primary purpose of the writer's writing the passage?

     A. To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of promoting athletics.

     B. To argue against supporting athletic teams in high schools.

     C. To entertain the reader with anecdotes about sports figures.

     D. To persuade that sports programs in schools need more money.

     A. Types of sports.                                   B. Unusual or rare events.

     C. Errors to be avoided.                            D. Expected standards of behavior.

66. What's the main idea of the second paragraph?

     A. Athletics are supported by many countries.

     B. Emphasis on athletics may have some negative effects.

     C. Athletics prepare young people for success in life.

     D. African Americans often make excellent athletes.

67. The author of this passage probably feels that __________.

     A. teamwork is not important to success in athletics

     B. playing sports makes young males much more manly

     C. athletes should be encouraged to build academic skills

     D. sports should be discouraged in most American schools

10、I am a good mother to three children . I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent .

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe . I show up . I listen . I try to laugh . I am a good friend to my husband . I have tried to make marriage vows (誓约) mean what they say . I am a good friend to my friends , and they to me . Without them , there would be nothing to say to you today .

So here’s what I wanted to tell you today : Get a life . A real life , not a desire of the next promotion (提升), the bigger paycheck , the larger house .

Get a life in which you are not alone . Find people you love , and who love you . And remember that love is not leisure (休闲) , it is work . Pick up the phone . Send an e-mail . Write a letter . And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted .

It is so easy to waste our lives , our days , our hours , and our minutes . It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago . Something really , really bad happened to me , something that changed my life in ways that , if I had my choice , it would never have been changed at all . And what I learned from it is what , today , seems to be the hardest lesson of all :

I learned to love the journey, not the destination . I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it , completely and totally .And I tried to do that , in part , by telling others what I had learned.

By telling them this : Read in the backyard with the sun on your face . Learn to be happy . And think of life as a deadly illness , because if you do , you will live it with joy and passion (激情) as it ought to be lived .

9、Why is setting goals important? Because goals can help you do, be, and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow yourself to 36  your life happen.

Successful and happy people have a vision of  37  their life should be and they set lots of goals to help them  38  their vision. By setting goals you are controlling your life. It’s   39  having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it this  40 . There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind which is  41  for her on a map. She can drive straight there  42  any wasted time or wrong turns.  43  driver has no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place  44  the first driver, but she drives  45  around, never getting anywhere,  46  using up gas and oil. Which driver do you want to be?

Winners in life set goals and  47  on them. Winners decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen  48 . Goals aren’t difficult to set,  49  they aren’t difficult to reach. It’s  50   you to find out what your goals, ideals and vision really are. You are the one who  51   decide what to  52  and in what direction to aim your life.

Research tells us when we write a goal down we are   53   to achieve it. Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have more power. Like a contract with yourself,  54  are harder to neglect or forget.

Also when you write your goals in a particular fashion you are able to stimulate yourself to be continuously alert to situations  55  will further your goals.

5、Burn rate is the speed at which a startup business consumes money. My rate was $75,000 a month. Four months after my company was set up, I had only a quarter of the starting capital left in the bank.

Looking for guidance, I went to talk to my friend, Arthur Walworth about my new venture.

“Times of great change always bring out the risk-takers,” he said. “And they leave winners and losers. My grandfather invested a lot of money in a project of Thomas Edison’s that ended up in failure.”

I was lost in thought at the notion of a Thomas Edison’s project ending in failure. Damn. It could happen to anybody! I must continue.

At that time CD-ROM sales had bombed, so investors were fleeing from the field. I didn’t turn away from mine entirely, but instead linked it to the Internet.

My plan was to offer consumers descriptions of home-design products by using a special software and let them modify the designs. Then we can enable them to get online professional and constructional help to have their houses built, decorated and furnished according to their own choice.

To realize my plan I needed investors, so I continued to meet regularly with venture capitalists. One said I had a great idea. But I needed to test it. Get the money somewhere. To get this money from a VC is going to cost my wife and my children! He turned down my request.

Wife? Children? I barely remembered them.

I was working nonstop―struggling to turn the key in the lock, to find the right way ahead.

The pressure was terrible. It was just at this time that my parents and sisters stepped up. Two hundred thousand dollars. A lot of money to them, invested in this crazy son and brother without a moment’s hesitation. Dad and Mom had driven out from Chicago and seen the passion in my little office and the trouble at home.

With their help my company survived and has been prospering ever since.

4、One day last September, as Britney Spears was about to board a flight to Los Angeles from London, a blue bottle fell out of her purse. She quickly put it back in, but not before the camera recorded the event. Neither Spears nor her spokesman was willing to comment on the contents of the bottle, but the next morning London’s Daily Express published a page of pictures under the headline “EXCLUSIVE: POP PRINCESS SPOTTED AT AIRPORT WITH POT OF SLIMMING TABLETS.” Spears was apparently carrying Zantrex-3, one of the most popular weight-loss pills now sold in the United States. The pill, which is sold at about fifty dollars for a month’s supply, contains a huge amount of caffeine, some green tea, and three common South American herbs that also act as stimulants (兴奋剂). It hit the U.S. market last March and has had a success that would be hard to overstate. Millions of bottles have been sold, and during the Christmas season it was displayed in the windows of the nation’s largest chain of vitamin shops, G.N.C. (It is so highly sought after that many of the stores keep it in locked counters.) Zantrex-3 is also sold at CVS, Rite Aid, Wal-Mart, and other chains, and over the telephone and on the Internet. If you type “Zantrex” into Google, more than a hundred thousand pieces of information about it will appear. At any moment, there are scores of people sell it on eBay.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the success story of Zantrex-3, however, is that it is far from unique. There are hundreds of similar products on the market today, and they are bought by millions of Americans. And though Zantrex’s producer makes some exciting statements (“the most advanced weight control compound (化合物)period”), so do the people who sell Stacker 2 and Anorex along with those who sell Carb Eliminator and Fat Eliminator. Almost all of these compounds suggest that they can help people lose weight and regain lost energy, and often without diet, exercise, or any other effort.

46. Britney Spears is a / an______.

   A. dancer          B. singer           C. athlete         D. chemist

47. Which of the following is also a kind of weight-loss pill?

   A. CVS           B. Rite Aid          C. Wal-Mart       D. Anorex

48. The underlined part of the sentence in the first paragraph is most likely similar in meaning to ______.

   A. it is difficult to say how successful Zantrex-3 is

   B. you can’t overstate the success of Zantrex-3

   C. you can’t think too highly of the success of Zantrex-3

   D. Zantrex-3 is not very successful

49. From the second paragraph we know that ______ .

   A. Zantrex-3 is one of the successful weight-loss pills on the US market

   B. Zantrex-3 is the most successful weight-loss pills on the US market

C. Zantrex-3 is the only weight-loss pill on the US market

D. there are five kinds of weight-loss pills on the US market

50. The text mainly tells us ______.

   A. when Britney Spears was found taking weight-loss pills with her

   B. how Zantrex-3 became successful in the USA

   C. weight-loss pills are very popular in the USA

   D. Zantrex-3 is forbidden to be sold on the US market

3、Three surfers rushed to save a man’s life after he was left drifting on a notorious stretch of water.

The men stayed with Greg Popple for 30 minutes and had to be rescued themselves by helicopter as the drama unfolded.

The 45-year-old had floated out on a body board near Hutchwns Point at 8:30 am. He found himself in trouble about half-a-mile from the shore and dangerously close to rocks. Surfers Graig Evans, 31, Robert Miles, 19, and Owain Daviees, 23, were risking their own safety to keep him floating for 30 minutes. Luckily a passer-by noticed what was going on and raised the alarm. Porthcawl Coastguard, Porthcaw Lifeboat and an RAF helicopter all took part in the rescue.

“The man who got into trouble was a body boarder-there was a big tide where he was,” said Joe Missen. “Three other surfers spotted he was in difficulty and he was going down. They kept him afloat because he was in a state of shock and out of energy. If Mr. Popple was closer to the rocks, it could have been a lot worse, but they managed to keep him from harm”.

Mr. Missen’s mum Alison, also part of the rescue team, said, “That part of the water is notorious for taking people out to nowhere”.

The three men had clocked off a night shift at Ford Motor Company shortly before the incident.
