A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury (埋葬) it in the garden and wait for it to flower(开花). A biodegradable (生物可降解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage users to recycle. Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and able to change shape. Overtime it can also break down into the soil without giving out any poisonous(有毒的)chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that includes a sunflower seed .When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms nitrates (硝酸盐). These feed the seed and help the flower grow. Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the cover so far. But we are working with scientists to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time.” said one scientist.
As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are constantly(不断)throwing their mobiles away. This means producers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can change this, according to the scientists.

Who would win in a competition to memorize numbers, a chimp (黑猩猩) or a teenager? The teenager? Think again. Scientists have proved that chimps perform better than human beings when it comes to this kind of problem. We may have to rethink what we believe about human memory.
Memory is our ability to learn something, save it and recall it when needed. Our memories are important to our sense of self, our personalities, and our ability to understand the world.
Scientists say that there are different types of memory. There is short-term memory and long-term memory. Your short-term memory saves information for a few seconds or a few minutes. For example, the time it takes to compare the prices of a few items in a store. Long-term memory involves the information you try hard to keep, because it’s meaningful to you (an example is data 数据 about family and friends. ) And then there is visual memory and sound memory. But these are not hard and fast: scientists argue a lot about the nature of memory.
Scientists have also found that people memorize things in different ways. Some memorize better with the help of pictures. Others are helped more by sounds. One thing’s for sure. If you can combine different kinds of memory together, you will remember a lot! So why not try pictures with English words? At the same time listen to recordings of the same group of words. It may help when it comes to memorizing it.
Imagination and association can be useful too. By imagination scientists mean picturing a word in your mind. Association means relating the word to something you already know.

Paul Nicklen waited patiently on a sheet of ice in the Arctic.  He was there to take pictures for National Geographic. Finally, he saw something big and white. It was a polar bear, swimming towards him in the icy water.
Paul lay down-on the ice to get a better photo, but the polar bear jumped out of the water and tried to attack him! Luckily for Paul, the ice cracked or broke and the bear fell back into the water The polar bear wasn’t so lucky. It couldn’t get a meal and had to swim farther away to find food.
To understand the polar bear’s problem, you need to know two things about the Arctic. First, the Arctic is mostly ocean. Second , ice cover a lot of the Arctic Ocean. In winter, the ice form a thick, white sheet, but in summer, the ice becomes thinner and break into pieces. Sea ice is the key to survival for Arctic animals. However, because of global warming, Arctic temperatures are rising and polar ice is melting.
Polar bears need ice to hunt seals, their favourite meal. They stand on the ice wait for the seal to come up for air. As Arctic ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes, or large pieces of floating ice. Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 km to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and sadly they drown.
On his last trip, Paul Nicklen saw three dead bodies of polar bears. Before global warming threatened Arctic ice, a dead bear was a rare sight, Paul is sad to see the dead bodies, wildlife experts thinks global warming will have a terrible effect on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to shrink and endanger the bear. Some scientists believe 65 percent of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050. in other word, polar bears are in great danger.

Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It’s bad to all living things in the world.
Polluted air from cars, planes and factories is so thick that it is like a quilt(被子) over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog(烟雾). Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away. And they mustn’t blow dirty smoke into the air. We need to do many other things. They are carried by air through the buildings and outside. Legionnaire s disease is only one of the illnesses that are caused by "sick buildings".
Some buildings can make you ill because their heating and air-conditioning(空调调节系统) are controlled(控制). Air from outside cannot get in through the closed windows; This indoor air pollution is a growing problem.
Legionnaire's disease may be the most serious result of sick buildings, but other unpleasant illnesses can appear.People who work in some buildings suffer (受苦)from tiredness, feeling sick and headaches. Their offices look bright and clean, but invisible(无形的) and dangerous bacteria are in the air around them.

You can be proud of yourselves, even if you can only make one or two of these green changes. The goal here is to limit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which are closely connected to the big problem of global-warming (全球变暖).
WAY 1: Bring your own cup to Starbucks. You’ll get a 10-cent discount, and it’s one less paper cup to end up in a dustbin. The store won’t create more waste when they throw away a cup.
WAY 2: Turn off your computer. When in standby mode, your PC is still using energy. Turning off a monitor (显示器) for 40 hours a week may only save $ 5 a month, but it reduces CO2 by 750 pounds.
WAY 3: Reuse plastic bags. Instead of throwing away 100 billion plastic bags a year, try and get a second, third, or tenth use out of them. Better yet, next time you shop, try a reusable bag. The amount of oil it would take to make just 14 plastic bags would run your car for one mile.
WAY 4: Use recycled paper in the bathroom. Most of the toilet paper we use is made from trees found in forests. If every family replaced(替换)one roll of toilet paper with a recycled one, 424,000 trees would still be standing.
WAY 5: Plant a tree. Adding green to your garden is beautiful and earth-pleasing. Just one tree will help make cleaner air and save the environment from 5, 000 pounds of hot carbon dioxide each year.
小题1:How many ways are mentioned(提及) in the passage?
A.Two. B.Three.
C.Four.D.Five.
小题2:What will happen if our PC is turned off when it isn’t in use?
A.It will help to save a large amount of money.
B.It will help to reduce a great deal of CO?.
C.It will save the amount of oil that runs your car for a mile.
D.It will be like planting 1.7 million acres of new trees.
小题3:Which ways suggest recycling or reusing of things?
A.Ways 3 & 4.B.Ways 2 & 3.
C.Ways 3 & 5.D.Ways 2 & 4.
小题4:How do these ways do good to our environment?
A.They all help reduce the use of energy like electricity.
B.They all cut down the number of the use of paper.
C.They all produce less greenhouse gases as a result.
D.They all help protect our trees and forests.
小题5:What is the best title for the passage?
