    　　In recent years many countries of the world have been faced with the problem of how to make their workers more productive．Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied．But do more various jobs lead to greater productivity? There is evidence to suggest that while variety certainly makes the worker's life more enjoyable, it does not actually make him work harder．As far as increasing productivity is concerned, then variety is not an important factor．

    　　Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important, and there is no doubt that this is true．The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modem factory with its complicated machinery, which must be used in a fixed way．Thus while freedom of choice may be important, there is usually very little that can be done to create it．

    　　Another very important consideration is how each worker contributes to the product he is making．In most factories the worker sees only one part of the product．Some car factories are now experimenting with having many small production lines rather than one large one, so that each worker contributes more to the production of cars on his line．It would seem that not only is the degree of the worker's contribution an important factor, therefore, but it is also one we can do something about．

    　　To what extent does more money lead to greater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important．But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is boring．Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more．A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours．Perhaps if we succeed in making their jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter working hours be so important to them．

    　　Some people collect sawfish snouts as prizes：One snout recently sold for nearly＄1,600 online．In some Asian cultures, the toothy snouts are used in ceremonies to drive evils and disease away．And sawfish are also delicious．A growing demand in Asia for the animal's fins for a pricey soup has contributed to the fish's disappearance．Compared with other fish, sawfish give birth late in life and at slow rates, which makes it hard for them to recover from overfishing．

    　　New efforts now aim to restore sawfish populations．Beginning next month, an international agreement will provide protection for all seven of the world's sawfish species．Scientists are hoping that it's not too late to save the sawfish．

    　　Until 1998,“this fish had never been formally studied in the United States,”says Tonya Wiley of the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Fla．“We didn't know such basic things as where they live, what habitat they use, how often they breed, how many young they have－even what age sawfish are when they begin breeding．”

    　　Through historical studies and field research, scientists have become aware of how much the fish's numbers have decreased．Today, there may be 90 percent fewer sawfish than there used to be．Wiley estimates that only 3,000 to 6,000 sawfish remain in U S waters．

         People traveling long distances frequently have to decide whether they would prefer to go by land,
    sea or air. Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours. Train carriages
    soon get full of passengers and stuffy. It is almost impossible to take your mind off the journey. Reading
    is only a partial solution, for the noise of the wheels clicking on the rails soon makes you sleepy. During
    the day, sleep comes in short periods. At night, when you really want to go to sleep, you can rarely
    manage to do so. Surely you arrive at your destination almost worn out. Long car journeys are even less
    pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can, at least, travel fairly safely at high
    speeds, but more often than not, the greater part of the journey is spent on roads with few service stations and too much traffic. By comparison, ferry trips or cruises offer a great variety of civilized comforts. You
    can stretch your legs on the spacious decks, play games, meet interesting people and enjoy delicious
    food-always assuming, of course, that the sea is calm. If it is not, and you are likely to get seasick, no
    form of transport could be worse. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea journeys take a long time.
         Airplanes have the reputation of being unsafe and even hardened travelers are afraid of them. They
    also have the disadvantages of being an expensive form of transport. But nothing can match them for
    speed and comfort. Traveling at a height of 30,000 feet, far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an
    hour is a very exciting experience. You do not have to think out ways of taking your mind off the journey,
    for an airplane gets you to your destination rapidly. For a few hours, you settle back in a deep armchair
    to enjoy the flight. The real enjoyment is to watch a film and drink wine on some services. But even when
    these things are not available, there is plenty to keep you occupied. A plane offers you an unusual and
    breathtaking view of the world. The journey is so smooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping. No matter how you decide to spend your time, one thing is certain: you will arrive at your
    destination fresh and energetic. You do not have to spend the next few days recovering from a long and
    arduous journey.

         Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him woods and products; they give
    him shade; and they help to prevent from droughts and floods.
         Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the
    most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in larg
    e numbers, only to find that without them he lost the best friends he had.
         Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which
    to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire, but without its trees its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced with floods and starvation.
    Even when a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to
    persuade the villagers to see this. The villagers want wood to cook their food with; and they can earn
    money by making charcoal or selling wood to the town man. They are usually too busy or too careless to
    plant and look after new trees. So, unless the government has a good system of control or can educate
    the people, the forests will slowly disappear.
         This does not only mean that the villagers' sons and grandsons have fewer trees. The results are even
    more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break the soil up-allowing the rain to sink in-and also
    bind the soil, thus preventing its being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on
    hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying away with it the rich top-soil, in
    which crops grow so well. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.
