Some scientists warn that ice near the Earth's Poles may indeed be melting. This “polar melting down” may be the first sign that the Earth is heating up. We could be in very serious trouble if this tread continues. It is estimated that a meltdown of as little as 10 percent of Antarctica's ice would raise sea levels around the globe by 4 to 9 meters. Floods would cover low-lying regions and turn coastal cities like New York and New Orleans into real life underwater world.
Scientists first predicted in the 1970s that heat trapped in the Earth's atmosphere could cause a polar meltdown. Many now believe that human activities are turning up the heat. When we burn fossil fuels like coal and oil, we add carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) gas to the Earth's atmosphere. Cutting down trees also makes carbon dioxide levels rise because trees normally soak up carbon dioxide to make food. Scientists say higher carbon dioxide levels strengthen the “green house effect” and could increase the Earth's temperature. In fact, carbon dioxide levels have risen by 30 percent since the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Over the past three years, satellite measurements have shown a sea-level rise of about a quarter inch worldwide. “If nothing is done to reduce fossil-fuel pollution and global warming, sea levels will rise even more.” Says geologist Richard Alley.
But even Alley admits that a polar meltdown would take time. The ice in Antarctica and Arctic locks up nearly nine times the volume of water contained in all the world's rivers and lakes. These are such big “ice cubes” and it would probably take thousands of years to melt them.
1.What consequence (后果) of global warming is mentioned in the passage?
[ ]
A.More tropical storms.
B.More tropical diseases.
C.Changes in farm productivity.
D.Coastal flooding.
2.Which of the following statement does the second paragraph support?
[ ]
A.Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere cannot keep the heat from escaping into space.
B.The increase of carbon dioxide gas may warm the planet and help to melt polar ice.
C.Cutting down trees helps to greatly reduce carbon dioxide levels.
D.The end of the short-lived age of fossil fuels is already in sight.
3.Geologist Richard Alley most likely agrees that ________.
[ ]
A.the sea-level rise can be prevented by cutting back on energy consuming activities
B.The recent breaking off of ice blocks from Antarctica is just a natural part of a long-term cycle
C.Antarctica temperatures have significantly changed since the Industrial Revolution
D.The polar meltdown may be an accidental change of climate rather than a sign of global warming
4.In which paragraph does the author mention the large quantities of polar ice?
[ ]
A.In the second paragraph.
B.In the third paragraph.
C.In the fourth paragraph
D.In the fifth paragraph.

Adult Education in the U. S.Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.
Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.
Secretaries, mechanics, and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. Nurses can take classes to increase their knowledge of nursing. If they know more or learn more, then they can get a better job or earn more money.
Continuing education classes give some adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from, typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available.
Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. For example, they can choose a class in almost any language, Chinese, Spanish, or English as a second language. There are classes in first aid or classes in sewing. There are also many other types of classes to choose from.
Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves. Overweight people can find exercise classes or classes in nutrition. Others can learn how to be good parents, or how to get along with other people.
There are many opportunities for adults to continue their learning. Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings, or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.
Thousands of people register for continuing education classes each year. They receive no diploma or certificate, and no grade for most of the classes they attend. For them, learning is something they do because they want to.

Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been a few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way
was it through training and practice, or are great players “born, not made?” First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past
players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate (模仿). In the history, only six countries have ever won the World Cup
three from South America and three from Western Europe. There has never been a great national team or a really great player from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Aifredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four.
Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood
a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a “ball” made of dirty and worn-out cloth. And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall in the slums (贫民窟) of Belfast.
All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn't explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.
1.The word “tricks” at the end of paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.
[ ]
2.Liverpool and Brazilian streets are two geographic terms used to show ________.
[ ]
A.where soccer players get their way
B.how neighborhood affects a soccer player's success
C.why they can produce the best soccer teams
D.what a poor, crowded area will provide a future soccer player with
3.We can infer from the sentence “… But only one became Pele” in the last paragraph that ________.
[ ]
A.Pele is the greatest soccer player
B.The greatest players are born with some unique quality
C.Pele's birthplace sets him apart from all the others
D.The success of a soccer player has everything to do with the family background
4.To get the way for a great player, a series of factors are directly mentioned except ________.
[ ]
A.age and birth
B.family and neighbor
C.training and practice
D.personality and character

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict,” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes
khaki pants and a sports shirt to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I'm working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday.” “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing,” said business consultant Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it's easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don't want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it's hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employees said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale (士气). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one everyday,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot of more casual clothes.”
1.David Smith refers to himself as having been “a clothes addict,” because ________.
[ ]
A.he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt
B.he couldn't stand a clean appearance
C.he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time
D.he didn't want to spend much money on clothes
2.According to this passage, which of the following statements is FALSE?
[ ]
A.Many employees don't like a conservative dress code.
B.Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.
C.A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.
D.All the employers in the U. S. are for casual office wear.
3.In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned EXCEPT ________.
[ ]
A.saving employees' money
B.making employees more attractive
C.improving employees' motivation(动机)
D.making employees happier

He has lived through various dangers but time may be running out for the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.
On September 11, Israel announced its decision to remove him, following several Palestinian suicide bomb attacks on Israel(以色列). “He should be punished for the killings,” an Israeli official said. “He has done nothing to stop the terrorist groups.”
But the decision has angered many other countries. China said that Arafat is the true leader, elected by the Palestinian people, and removing him would harm the peace in the Middle East. This idea is shared by other governments.
Arafat himself said, “They can kill me, but never get me out of my country.” He has spent most of his life in danger as the most important aim of Israel. But, just like a cat with nine lives, Arafat escaped every time.
For years he has made a practice of sleeping in a different bed each night, thinking a moving person is harder to hit. In 1985, Israel sent fighter planes to kill Arafat. The wild bombing destroyed his office in Tunis but Arafat himself was unhurt. In 1992, the aircraft in which he was flying over north Africa broke in two during a crash landing. The pilot was killed but he managed to remain alive.
What is so unbelievable is that he always remains calm in great danger.
Israeli tanks and planes attacked his office building in Ramallah in December, 2001. When they saw the attackers coming, Arafat's bodyguards ignored his orders to stay still and carried him to safety underground. Seconds later, several bombs were dropped nearby. Though safe, his bodyguards were so frightened they were wet in sweat.
But, Arafat, with Israeli tanks only 200 meters away, showed no fear at all. He stayed in the damaged office, talking by phone with foreign leaders in hope of preventing further attacks from Israel.
All these experiences have made him a beloved leader to his people and an enemy to some others.
But has he used up the last of his nine lives? Only time will tell.
1.According to the passage, which statement is true?
[ ]
A.In 1992, Arafat's plane crashed in south Africa.
B.Israeli officers thought Arafat himself sent the terrorist groups to Israel.
C.China is the only country against Israel's decision of removing Arafat.
D.Being Palestinian leader, Arafat would rather die in his own country than being driven away from his people.
2.What did the author mean by saying “just like a cat has nine lives” when he talked about Arafat?
[ ]
A.Arafat is as clever as a cat.
B.Arafat can live as long as a cat.
C.Arafat can stay alive after accidents or disasters as if he has nine lives.
D.Arafat should have died for at least 8 times.
3.The underlined word “ignore” can be replaced by ________.
[ ]
A.obey the instructions
B.take no notice of
C.pay much attention to
D.give out orders
4.What's the writer's attitude towards Arafat's future, judging from the last sentence of the passage?

Keep Up the JonesesIn the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what keeping up with the Joneses' is about. It is the story of someone who tries to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself: He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always tying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich life-style of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses”, because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich life-style of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the county for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of tying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

[ ]
A.want to be as rich as their neighbours
B.want others to know or to think that they are rich
C.don't want others to know they are rich
D.want to be happy
2.It can be inferred from the story that rich people like to ________.
[ ]
A.live outside New York City
B.live in New York City

A.an important name
B.a popular name in the United States
C.his neighbour's name
D.not a good name

Teaching PoetryNo poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.
All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, bests of all, reciting it.
I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isn't tune for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, “a heightening of life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.
I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.
1.According to the passage, to have a better understanding of a poem, the best way is ________.
[ ]
A.to discuss it with others
B.to analyze it by oneself
C.to hear it read out
D.to practise reading it aloud
2.The best explanation for the underlined sentence in the first paragraph should be ________.
[ ]
A.we should end the analyzing the poem by reading it aloud
B.students should read the poem at the end of poem class
C.to feel the original meaning of the author by hearing the poem to be read out loudly after discussing the meaning of it
D.sometimes the sound of the poem represents the meaning of it
3.What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply?
[ ]
A.The teaching of poetry should have been much more stressed.
B.The teaching of poetry is more important than the teaching of any other subject.
C.One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry.
D.Poetry is the foundation of all languages and literature courses.

Genghis KhanGenghis Khan, the great Mongol conqueror, was born in about 1162. His father, a petty Mongol chieftain, named the boy Temujin, after a defeated rival chieftain, and for some years the surviving members of the family lived m constant danger and poverty. This was just the beginning, Temujin's situation was to become a lot worse before it got better. When he was a young man, he was captured in a attack by a rival tribe. To prevent his escaping, a wooden collar was placed around his neck. From then on, he was kept as a prisoner in a primitive, barren country, There Temujin rose to become the most powerful man in the world.
His rise started when he managed to escape from his captors. He then allied himself with Toghril, a friend of his father's, and chieftain of one of the related tribes living in the area. There followed many years of cruel warfare among these various Mongol tribes, in the course of which Temujin gradually fought his way to the top. The tribesmen of Mongolia had long been known as skilled horsemen and fierce warriors. Throughout history, they had made unexpected attacks into northern China. However, before the rise of Temujin, the various tribes had always spent most of their energy in fighting each other. By a combination of military power, diplomacy, ruthlessness and organizational ability, Temujin managed to join all of these tribes together under his leadership, and in 1206 a meeting of the Monglo chieftains proclaimed him Genghis Khan, or “the universal emperor”.
The powerful military machine that Genghis Khan had assembled was then turned outward upon neighboring nations. He first attacked the Western Xia state in northwestern China and the Jin Empire in northern China. While these battles were going on, a strong disagreement arose between Genghis Khan and the Khwarezm Shah Muhammad, who ruled a considerable empire in Persia and central Asia. In 1219, Genghis led his armies against the Khwarezm Shah. Central Asia and Persia were overrun, and the Khwarezm Shah's empire was completely destroyed.
