Calories show the energy content(含量)of different food. We allneed a certain amount each day to make our bodies work properly. Unfortunately, people in Europe and the US now eat about 20 times as much sugar and at least five times as much fat as they did in 1800. This may have something to do with the increase in heart disease in western countries.
For wedding feasts (婚宴),the Bedouin people sometimes prepare a meal of stuffed roast camel. First, they stuff a fish with eggs. Then they put the fish inside a chicken. They put the chicken inside a whole roast sheep. Then, finally they put all of this inside a cookedcamel!

Scientists had long dreamt of splitting the atom(原子) and let out some of its huge quantity of energy. They didn't find out how to do it until the 1940s.
Uranium is one of the matters whose atoms can be split fairly easily.A small particle(粒子) is added to an atom of uranium, which then breaks into two smaller atoms. The change has other results. It makes the uranium very hot.It also produces two or there free particles of the kind first added. These free particles move around, splitting other uranium atoms, and so begins a “chain reaction”(链式反应), which produces more heat and more free particles. Both the heat and the chain reaction are important.
A gas or a liquid is sent into the reactor(反应堆)to collect and carry away the heat.It is used to boil water, and the steam so produced drives the machinery which produces electricity. The chain reaction allows the process(过程) to continue. The reaction, which could be very rapid, is slowed down by a certain matter, which surrounds the fuel.
Today, many people are wondering how long the world's store of coal and oil will last. Both these fuels, like uranium, are producers of heat energy. Is atomic energy the answer to the world's energy problem?
(1) Which of the following words can take the place of the underlined word“splitting”?

A.joining B.choosing
C.breaking D.heating

[ ]
A.Two more atoms will appear
B.The atom will split in two and let out energy.
C.More free particles will be produced.
D.The uranium will become very hot.
(3) “Chain reaction”means______.
[ ]
A.free particles produced in the reaction will split other atoms, which in turn will produce more free particles
B.free particles will split more atoms after splitting some atoms
C.atoms split by free particles will continue to split
D.reaction can go on and on with the help of a chain of particles
(4) Which of the following orders shows rightly how a nuclear (原子能的) power plant works?
[ ]
a.Heat is made to boil water.
b.The machinery produces electricity
c.The chain reaction produces heat.

Since the discovery of oil in 1938, Kuwait rulers have turned the country into a prosperous welfare state. It has free primary and secondary education, free health care and social services, and the Kuwaitis do not have to pay any personal income tax for those services. The rate of literacy is high and constantly growing. The University of Kuwait was opened in 1966. but many of the Kuwaiti students still study in colleges and universities abroad, at state expense. Kuwait is an Arab country, and about 99 percent of the people who live there are Moslems. But fewer than half of these Moslems are actually citizen of Kuwait. 阅读下列短文, 从所给的四个选项中, 选出最佳答案。
If you can find a tree which has been cut down, you will see many rings, or circles on the base of the trunk. By learning to read these rings, you can find out about the tree's life.
The number of rings tells you how old the tree is. Each year, new wood is formed on the outside of the tree. This new wood is light in color when the tree is growing in spring and summer, and dark in winter when the tree is not growing much. So, if you count the rings of dark-or-light-colored wood, you can often find out how old the tree is.
You can also tell which years have been good years and which years have been bad years. When the light-colored rings are very wide, it means that the tree has been growing quickly that year. If the light rings are narrow, it has been growing slowly. If the rings on a tree trunk were greatly magnified (放大), you would be able to see why the rings are light-colored when the tree is growing quickly, and dark-colored when the tree is growing slowly. The tree trunk is made up of microscopic tubes (毛细管), like some pipes, carrying water from the soil, through the trunk, and up to the leaves. They are wide and thin-walled when the tree is growing quickly and they are carrying a lot of water. They are narrow and stuck together when the tree is not growing so quickly.
When a tree is old, the tubes in the center of the tree don't carry water. The walls of the tubes have become thick with materials which have stuck along them over the years, forming a kind of wood called "heartwood". This kind of wood is darker in color than the young, growing wood on the outside of the tree.
You don't very often see whole tree trunks which have been cut across. But once you learn to read a cross section (横截面) of the wood, you can see much more in wood which has been used to make boxes, houses, and other things.
In most wood, instead of seeing the trunk cut across, you are seeing it cut along its length. Because you don't see the whole tree, you can't tell how old it is.
(1) The writer says you can tell the age of a tree by _______.
[ ]
A. the number of rings in its trunk
B. the size of the base of its trunk
C. the color of its rings
D. the rings on the outside of the tree
(2) When wood of a tree is mostly light in color, this means that the tree _______.
[ ]
A. grew slowly
B. grew quickly
C. only grew in winter D. only grew in summer
(3) If all the rings in the cross section of a tree trunk are wide and about the same width, then we can tell that the tree _____.
[ ]
A. grew quickly all its life
B. grew slowly all its life
C. grew quickly when it was young and more slowly later
D. grew slowly when it was young and more quickly later
(4) In a certain country, it is usually dry and rains heavily every three years. Which drawing given below shows a tree trunk from this country?

My father and I were very close. I loved pleasing him, and he was always proud of my success. If I won a spelling contest (竞赛) at school, he was on top of the world. Later in life whenever I got a promotion (提升), I'd call my father right away and he'd rush out to tell all his friends. In 1970, when I was named president of the Ford Motor Company, I didn't know which of us was more excited.
Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their feelings and their love — not only at home, but also in public. Most of my friends would never hug their fathers. But I hugged and kissed my dad at every opportunity —nothing could have felt more natural.
