It was Monday morning. Susie left home early that day because she was going to start a new job in downtown Manhattan. She was only eighteen and this was her first job. When she got to the bus stop, there were so many people waiting that she almost called a passing taxi. Later she was glad that she had waited for the bus because the traffic was so heavy that even a taxi would not have arrived much earlier. As it was, she was a few minutes late.
She took the elevator (电梯) to the eighth floor and went directly to the office where she had been interviewed (面试) by Mr Samson two weeks before. This was the man she was going to work for. She knocked on the door slightly and waited, but there was no answer. Just then she heard the sound of someone's voice coming from the next office. She opened the door and looked in. There Mr Samson was talking angrily to all the people in the office. He suddenly turned around and left the room. Later in the day, Susie found out what had happened. Because Mr Samson lived forty miles away in Westchester Country, he had to take the train to work and would normally arrive at the office around nine thirty. This morning, however, he happened to catch a late train, and when he arrived at the office, not a single person was working. They were all standing around smoking, chatting and telling jokes.

Doctors have known for a long time that extremely loud noises can cause hearing damage or loss. The noise can be the sound of a jet airplane or machines in factories or loud music or other common sounds found at home or at work. A person only needs to hear the noise for little more than one second to be affected.
An American scientist has found that using aspirin can increase the temporary (暂时的) hearing loss. He did an experiment using a number of students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amount of aspirin for different periods of time, then he tested their hearing ability. Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening.
One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one's own.
Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardening, one can spend one's free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has the reward of one who has shared the secret of Nature.
Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theaters, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight's (两周) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want, and the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.

C.Because of certain disadvantages of living outside London, some people who work in London prefer to live outside London.
D.Because of certain advantages of living outside London, many people who work in London prefer to live outside London.
2.One can spend some money buying a little house with a garden in the country, but with the same money he can oily ________ in London.

A.get a small flat with a garden
B.have a small flat with a garden
C.rent a small flat without a garden
D.buy a small flat without a garden

[ ]
A.their life was meaningless
B.their life was invaluable

5.“… the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those…”. The underlined words refer to ________.
