　　Diego Maradona acknowledged(承认)that he struck the ball with his hand in the famous“Hand of God”goal against England in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals．

　　Maradona appeared to hit the ball with his hand into the net, and officials allowed the goal to stand despite protests by the English team．Argentina went on to win 1986 quarterfinal match 2-1 and then win the World Cup．

　　In his most detailed comments yet, Maradona said he was unable to reach the ball for a header(头球)when he went up against the taller English goalkeeper, Peter Shilton．

　　In 1991, Maradona failed a drug test and was banned for 15 months．Nine years later, FIFA chose him and Pele as the best players in soccer history．

　　Liu already missed the Berlin Golden League series on Sunday and won't be able to catch the IAAF Grand Prix final slated for September 18-19 in Monaco．

　　He plans on attending an IAAF all-star tournament in Japan at the end of this month．

　　More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States．The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual．In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Friday)．This became known as“dress-down Friday”or“casual Friday．”“What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing,”said business consultant, Maisly Jones．

　　Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it's easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code．“A lot of young people don't want to dress up for work,”says the owner of a software company,“so it's hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code．”Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes．In a study conducted by Levi Strauss Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale．Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact(影响)on productivity．Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money．“Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,”one person said．“For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes．”

　　Life is never easy for the disabled．To improve understanding and raise support for people with disabilities, the United Nations made December 3 the International Day of Disabled Persons in 1992．

　　One way that life for the disabled can be improved is through new technology．

　　A recent development is an“electronic eye”that can be fitted to a pair of glasses to help the blind cross roads more safely．Last Monday, Japanese researches said the new device(装置)uses a camera and computer to sense the location of a crossing point, its width and the color of traffic lights．The camera would be at eye level, and be connected to a tiny computer．It would relay information using a voice speech system．It would give commands and information through a small speaker placed near the ear．The scientists are now working on the best way to put the device into a pair of glasses that a blind person can wear．

　　In another development, new technology is opening up the world of computers for the disabled．Thanks to a hands-free device invented in Canada, using a computer will soon be a lot easier for disabled people．The“Nouse”, short for“nose as mouse”, uses movements at the tip pf the user's nose to direct the cursor(光标)on the screen．Once the computer is turned on, an ordinary Web cam(computer camera)takes a close up photo of the tip of nose．It then mirrors the nose's movements on screen to move the cursor, just as a hand would normally move a mouse．

　　“The Nouse is also programmed to let users give orders by blinking(眨眼)．”For example, the right mouse click would require the user to blind twice and the left mouse click would require the user to blink three times, explained a researcher．

　　“Devices such as the Nouse are wonderful because they give disabled people greater independence,”said Penn-Symons, chief executive(首席执行官)of British charity(慈善团体)Disabled Living Foundation．

　　I entered St Thomas's Hospital as a medical student at the age of 18 and spent five years there．I was an unsatisfactory student, for my heart, as you might have guessed, was not in it．I wanted, I had always wanted, to be a writer, and in the evenings, after my high tea, I wrote and read．Before long, I wrote a novel, called“Liza of Lambeth”, which I sent to a publisher, was accepted．It appeared during my last year at the hospital and had something of a success．It was of course an accident, but naturally I did not know that．I felt I could afford to give up medical and make writing my profession(职业)⑨, so, three days after I graduated from the school of medicine, I set out for Spain to write another book．Looking back now, and knowing as I do the terrible difficulties of making a living by writing, I realize I was taking a fearful risk(冒险)．It never even happened to me．

　　The next ten years were very hard, and I earned only 100 pounds a year．Then I had a bit of luck．The manager of the Court Theatre put on a play that failed; the next play he had planned to put on was not ready, and…he was at his wits' end．He read a play of mine and, though he did not much like it, he thought it might just run for six weeks till the play he had in mind to follow it could be produced．It ran for fifteen months．Within a short while I had four plays running in London at the same time．Nothing of the kind had ever happened before．I was the talk of the town．One of the students at St Thomas's Hospital asked the famous doctor with whom I had worked whether he remembered me．“Yes, I remember him quite well,”he said,“One of our failures, I'm afraid．”

　　Chinese people are now spending more time surfing the net than watching TV, according to results of a survey by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS)published Thursday．

　　The survey, of citizens of five Chinese cities, found that 79 percent of interviewees use the Internet for information, and 55.1 percent read news on the Internet．About 63 percent of the interviewees use e-mail．The average times spent surfing the net and watching TV were 2.73 hours and 1.29 hours, respectively．

　　Only 10.4 percent reported use the Internet primarily to send and receive e-mail; 65.9 percent read online news; 62.2 percent quite often play games on-line．More and more people have taken an interest in the entertainment opportunities online．Up to 56.5 percent of interviewees quite often download music, and 53.5 percent get entertainment messages from the Internet．

　　Yet the survey found that television is still the dominant(占优势的)⑦ mass medium．Seventy-nine percent of interviewees choose to watch TV to get information, and another 75 percent take newspapers as important as TV．

　　Five major web sites in the Chinese language, namely Sina, Sohu, Netease, Baidu and Yahoo are still ranked top ones by web users, and those that voted for Sina as the best among them were 30.9 percent．

　　Authorized statistics showed that web users in China have already exceeded⑧ 100 million, second to that of the United States．
