　　It’s eleven o’clock, and Mr．Sims has just asked the class to pay attention for the fiftieth time while he explained a math problem．Carson Webster is sitting over by the window trying to listen to the teacher, but his mind is not on the problem Mr．Sims is discussing．Carson’s mind is on a little mouse named Millie that is busily moving around in his pocket．Millie is not very happy．At breakfast, she had climbed into Carson’s pocket and gone to sleep while Carson ate two pieces of bread and read the newspaper．Carson had forgotten Millie was there until he was halfway in class．Now that Millie’s morning sleep was over, she was ready to exercise．Lucky for Carson, Millie was in a pocket with a button or he might be in serious trouble．

　　“Carson?”Mr．Sims, who was usually rather strict with his students, was suddenly looking at Carson with his eyes wide open, rolling his stick in his hand．Carson had to pay attention．

　　“Could you please repeat the question?”said Carson, feeling his pocket．

　　“I asked if you would agree with the statement,”said Mr．Sims pleasantly．

　　“Well, I’m not really attentive at the moment,”said Carson．“I think I would need to give it more consideration．”Carson did not have the slightest idea as to what Mr．Sims was talking about．

　　“I see,”said Mr．Sims seriously,“Then I guess you’re uncertain about whether the product of zero by any other number is always zero?”

　　“Oh, I know that,” said Carson, who could feel himself turning red as a couple of kids including Bob began to laugh．He knew his punishment would come soon．To his surprise, however, the teacher didn’t seem angry．

　　“I’m so glad,”said Mr．Sims, turning back to the blackboard．“Oh, and by the way, Carson,”he continued, “I think a cage would be a healthier place for your little friend．Would you agree with that statement?”Just at that time, Millie let out a weak but clear cry and stuck her head out of Carson’s pocket．

　　“Yes,”Carson said with a smile．“I would totally agree with that statement!”

　　“Taxi drivers”, said BOBICO(Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Bid Committee)staff, “ are learning English to support the 2008 bid for the Olympic Games．”

　　Albert Selmer, a German businessman who speaks good English, was pleasantly surprised during his latest trip to Beijing．When he got into a taxi on Chang an Avenue, the driver greeted him and asked where he would like to go－in English!“This couldn’t be imagined eight years ago when I first visited Beijing, ” said Selmer．Selmer wouldn’t have been so surprised had he known so many people are learning English in this Olympic bid city．

　　Eight years ago Beijing failed in its bid for 2000 Games．One of the reasons was that foreigners found it hard to communicate with Beijing residents, most of whom speak only Chinese．This time, the city is working to improve communication．

　　“One great change has happened during Beijing’s preparations”, BOBICO officials are speaking directly in English instead of using interpreters as they did eight years ago．

　　In addition to BOBICO officials, Beijing residents are looking forward to the 2008 Games by actively learning the foreign language．Free classes offered in a number of Beijing communities are enjoying high attendance．Residents are taught useful expressions, greetings．How to give directions and how to introduce themselves．

　　Shop assistants, bus and taxi drivers and even policemen are learning English．The young taxi driver who surprised the German visitor is probably one of those learners．

　　The first-stage aim of the “ ‘Beijing citizens’ English Speaking Plan ” started by the city government in August, is to popularize English among government staff, taxi drivers, hotel staff and shop assistants．In five years the percentage of Beijing residents who can speak English will be raised to around 30 percent from the present 15 percent．

　　The Jet d’Eau together with the Flower Watch are the main attractions every year for the tourists visiting Geneva．The Jet d’Eau has become the symbol of Geneva for a long time．This is a 140 meters high water monument with a rich hist0ry．Eight 13,500－watt projectors light the grand column(圆柱)of the fountain in the evening, from early March until the second Sunday of October．The Flower Watch, which was created at the edge of the English Garden in 1955, reminds us about that Geneva is the birthplace of the Swiss clock and watch making, and that this industry has become internationally famous, as well through the quality of the watches as through their beautiful appearance．

　　Sails on Lake Geneva are also enjoyable．The Lake of Geneva, lying among the Alps, is a true inland sea, making possible a wide range of pleasant boat trips, you can relax and watch the beautiful scenes pass by．

“You don’t say!”

　　A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms, though my teacher emphasized (强调)the importance(重要性)again and again．But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience(经历)．

　　One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk．As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished(or greatly surprised)．Gently(轻轻)shaking his head and shrugging his shoulders(耸肩)，he said, “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled．I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate topic(适当的话题)．“Well, I’d better change the topic．” So I said to him, “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall?By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it．It was magnificent(or great and beautiful)．” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide．“The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world．We are very proud of it” Soon I was interrupted(or stopped suddenly)again by his words：“You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t request(or ask in a polite way)you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised．I said, “Didn’t you say ‘you don’t say’?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears．He began to explain, “‘You don’t say’ actually means ‘really?’ It is an expression of surprise．Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms．” Only then did I know I had made a fool of myself．Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions．

　　The famous director of a big and expensive movie planned to film a beautiful sunset over the ocean(海洋)so that the audiences(or people who watch the film)could see his hero and heroine in front of it at the end of the film as they said goodbye to each other for ever．He sent his camera crew(摄制组)out one evening to film the sunset for him．

　　The next morning he said to the men, “Have you provided me with that sunset?”

　　“No, sir．” the men answered．

　　The director was angry．“Why not?” he asked．

　　“Well, sir,” one of the men answered．“We’re on the east coast here, and the sun sets in the west．We can get you a sunrise over the sea if necessary, but not a sunset．”

　　“But I want a sunset!” the director shouted．“Go to the airport, take the next flight to the west coast, and get one．”

　　But then a young secretary had an idea．“Why don’t you photograph a sunrise,” she suggested, “and then play it backwards?Then it’ll look like a sunset．”

　　The camera crew went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay(海湾)．Then at nine o’clock they took it to the director．“Here it is, sir!” they said, and gave it to him．He was very pleased．

　　They all went into the studio．“All right,” the director explained．“now our hero and heroine are going to say good-bye．Run the film backwards so that we can see the ‘sunset behind them．’”

　　The “sunset” began, but after a quarter of a minute, the director suddenly put his face in his hands and shouted to the camera crew to stop．

　　The birds in the film were flying backwards and the waves on the sea were going away from the beach(海滩)．
