Last fall, I enrolled myself and my 2-year-old son in a class called“Parenting In Modem Times. ”While my time alone with him was wonderful—singing silly songs, squeezing into boxes not meant for adult-sized humans and playing other funny games —it was later, when the mothers separated from the children for our weekly discussion group, that one of the real challenges of modem-day parenting appeared.

On one particular Monday morning, we shared our parenting joys and worries. What these smart, loving, devoted mothers shared one by one, some tearfully, was a need to catch a precious thing lost: time to themselves.

Not days of it, mind you. Just an hour here or there to take a leisurely walk or a warm bath. To work out at the health club. To read a ravel. To write letters to old friends. Over and over the message was the same; It used to be so easy; why does it seem impossible now? Ah, time. Remember when, as a kid, you complained about having too much of it with nothing to do.

It's hardly news that our lives are more complicated today than ever. We play so many more roles: wife, parents, child to our own aging parents, professional, volunteer, friend, housekeeper—and that's often all in one. No wonder we sometimes feel stressed out.

“This is the first time in my life where I feel overwhelmed(不知所措), ”says Dana, a 34-year-old mother of two children aged 6 and 3, who works as a part-time saleswoman. “ I don't feel like I'm in control any more of all these parts of me. ”

She's not alone. “Multiple roles”was highest among woman aged 30 to 39, a time when many women are combining child raising and jobs for the first time.

For lots of women who choose to have families; this is when those babies are born. Marry are trying to stay on the job or simple need the income, which means little time away from work.
