People always think about "the problem of youth". If there is one-which I take leave to doubt-it is
older people who create it, not the young themselves.Let us get down to fundamentals and agree that
the young are after all human beings-people just like their elders. There is only one difference between
an old man and a young one:the young man has a beautiful future before him while the old man a
splendid future behind him and maybe that is where the rub is.
When I was a teenager, I felt that I was just young and unknown-that I was a new boy in a huge
school, and I would have been very pleased to be regarded as something so interesting as a problem.
For one thing, being a problem gives you a certain identify, and that is one of the things the young are
busily engaged in seeking.
I find young people exciting. They have an air of freedom, and they have not a dull promise to mean
ambitions or love of comfort. They are not anxious social climbers, and they have no devotion to
important things. All this seems to me to link them with life, and the origins of things. It's as if they were in
some sense of cosmic beings in violent and lovely contrast with us suburban (乡村的) creatures. All that
is in my mind when I meet a young person. He may be too proud, illmannered, selfconfident or selfsatisfied, but I do not turn for protection to boring clich?s about respect for elders as if age were a reason for
respect.I accept that we are equals, and I will argue with them, as an equal, if I think he is wrong.

The first day of school our professor introduced someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi, handsome man. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old.Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids, and then retire and travel.”

“No seriously,’ I asked.I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. “I always dreamed of having college education and how I’m getting one!” she told me.

Over the course of the school year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled(尽情享受)in the attention bestowed(给予)upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. She leaned into the microphone and simply said, “we do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humour every day. You’ve got to have a dream, When you lose your dreams, you die. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability.”

She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

1. What qualities did Rose have according to the passage?

     A.Humourous and determined

2. Why was Rose in college at such an age?

A.To find a rich husband at such an age.

B.To realize her dream of having college education.

C.To further her education for a better job.

     D.To make more young friends.

3. Rose once made a great speech.

     A.at the graduation ceremony.

     B.at a football banquet

     C.at an annual meeting

     D.at a baseball banquet

4. From what Rose said, we learn that

A.everyone will end up growing older.

     B.we can’t stay young successfully.

C.we can achieve much if we want to.

D.dream is the key to success.

It all began with a stop at a red light.

Kevin Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter, Hannah, back from a sleepover in 2006 While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.

"Dad, if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal," Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on, but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered (纠缠)her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.

"What do you want to do?" her mom responded."Sell our house?"

Warning! Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager.Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family home and donating half the proceeds to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.

Eventually, that's what the family did.The project —crazy, impetuous (鲁莽的) and utterly inspiring —is written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month: "The Power of Half." It's a book that, frankly, I'd be nervous about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it.An impressionable child reads this, and the next tiling you know your whole family is out on the street。

At a time of enormous needs in Haiti and elsewhere, when so many Americans are trying to help Haitians by sending everything from text messages to shoes, the Salwens offer an example of a family that came together to make a difference —for themselves as much as the people they were trying to help.In a column a week ago, It described neurological (神经学的)evidence from brain scans that unselfishness lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primary satisfaction. The Salwens' experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.

Mr.Salwen and his wife, Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better off in a bigger house. But after they downsized, there was much less space to retreat to, so the family members spent more time around each other.A smaller house unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendly house.

50.The best title for the passage should be "______".

A.The Less, the Better                  B.An Expected Satisfaction

C.Something We Can Live Without        D.Somewhat Crazy but Inspiring

51.What does the underlined word "inequity" most probably mean in Paragraph 3?

       A.Unfairness                           B.Satisfaction

       C.Personal attitude                        D.Reasonable statement

52.What does the underlined sentence " Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager." (in paragraph 5) means? ______

A.Never give a quick answer to an idealistic teenager

B.Unless a child is realistic, never give an answer immediately

C.Give an answer if the child is reasonable

D.Don't respond to a child's demands firmly without consideration

53.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The Salwens regretted selling their house.

B.The relationship between the family members of the Salwens is much closer.

       C.Small houses can bring happiness.

D.The Salwens intend to buy another big house.

54.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Mercedes Coupe is only an ordinary car which is quite cheap.

B.Unselfishness has nothing to do with people's primary satisfaction.

C.Hannah asked her parents to do something charitable and they sold their house.

D.The writer's children asked him to sell their house.
