An old man died and left his son a lot of money. But the son was a foolish young man, and he quickly spent all the money, so that soon he had nothing left. Of course, when that happened, all his friends left him. When he was quite poor and alone, he went to see his uncle, who was a kind, clever old man and often helped people when they had troubles.

“My money has finished and my friends have gone,” said the young man. “What will happen to me now?”

“Don’t worry, young man.” Answered his uncle. “Everything will soon be all right again. Wait, and you will soon feel much happier.”

The young man was very glad. “Am I going to get rich again then?” he asked his uncle.

“No, I didn’t mean that,” said the old man. “ I meant that you would soon get used to being poor and to having no friends.”

I have never believed in superstitions. I have always thought that they were foolish. For example, I have always heard that walking under a ladder brings bad luck, but I’ve never believed it. I have walked under ladders many times, but nothing has ever happened. It’s the same with black cats. I’ve never believed that a black cat crossing your path brought bad luck-never until this afternoon: But ever since I heard what happened to my student Sam, I have been wondering about this superstition business.

A few days ago Sam was walking down Main Street thinking about something, so he wasn’t paying attention to where he was going and he walked right under a ladder leaning against a building. A black cat ran out of a doorway just at that moment, and Sam fell over it. His shoulder hit the ladder. A man painting the building was at the top of that ladder. His bucket of yellow paint fell down to the ground. Poor Sam. He was a mess.

After we had gone to bed, I was suddenly awakened some time after midnight by the sound of running feet in the corridor and a cry of fire. Waking John up, I jumped out of bed and rushed to Aunt Bessie’s room. Aunt Bessie had already heard the alarm and was up. I hurried her into the corridor. As we passed my room, I saw John folding his shirts and placing them neatly in a suitcase.

I shouted at him to forget our clothes and get out while there was still time. I took Aunt Bessie to the lobby and it was full of guests. Minutes passed. I started back up the stairs to find out what had happened. A fireman stopped me. Just then, John appeared at the head of the stairway, his suitcase in his right hand, and in his left, the umbrella.

“Good Lord?” said Aunt Bessie, “ The best dressed man at the fire!”
