聘任
西奥先生身材修长,面庞消瘦,两鬓斑白.他生性温和,平日沉默寡言.研究学术问题,他精力充沛,记忆力惊人,而对日常生活的琐碎小事,却不甚了了.
坎福特大学需要聘任一名工作人员，上百人申请这个空缺位置，西奥也递上了申请书。最后只有西奥等15人获得面试的机会，坎福特大学地处一个小镇上，周围只有一家旅馆，由于住客骤增，单人房间只好两人同住。和西奥同住的一位年轻人，叫亚当斯，足足比西奥年轻20岁，亚当斯自信心很强，且有一副洪亮的嗓音，旅客里时常可以听到他朗朗的笑声。显而易见，这是一个聪明伶俐的人。
校长及评选小组对所有的候选人进行了一次面试。筛选后只剩下西奥和亚当斯两人了，小组对聘请谁仍犹豫不决，只好让他俩在大学礼堂进行一次公开的演讲后，再行决定。演讲题目定为“古代苏门人的文明史”，演讲时间定于三天之后。
在这三天里，西奥寸步不离房间，废寝忘食,日夜赶写讲稿。而亚当斯不见有任何动静----酒吧间里依旧传出他的笑声。每天他很晚才回来，一边问西奥的讲稿进展情况，一边叙述自己在弹子房、剧院和音乐厅的开心事。
