For thousands of years man couldn't fly. Birds can fly with their wings (翅膀) . It is very easy for them to fly but it was very difficult for man because man hasn't got wings.
The first plane was made of pieces of wood and some other things. Two brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, built it.
When the two brothers were still very young, they often watched birds flying in the sky. When they were older they started to make“the things that can fly”.
In 1903 , Wright brothers did their flying test (试验) at Kitty Howk. The date was December 17. The time was the middle of winter. It was fine that day and the sky was clear.
At half past ten in the morning, the two brothers began their flying test. Orville lay on the bottom (底部) wing of his plane and started to fly. The plane went higher and higher into the sky!
For the first time in history (历史) man could fly.

There are not only land--birds but also seabirds. The most ordinary
(普通的)seabird is the seagull(海欧). It has a white body, a white head and a yellow beak(喙). There is a very, very small spot(斑点)of red at the very end of the beak underneath(在下面). All gulls have very strong wings(翅膀)so that they can fly far out to sea. The gull flies out too far, so, that it is too tired to fly back to the shore(岸). It does not get frightened(恐慌), for it can sit and rest upon the waves(浪). A seagull's wings do not get wet because all its feathers(羽毛)have a kind of oil(油)over there, so that when the water gets on to the feathers it just runs off again. Gulls can even sleep on the waves.Sailors
(水手)know a lot about seagulls and they never kill them. When the gulls fly a long way out to sea, sailors say that it means fine weather is coming. When the gulls stay near the shore, sailors say that there will be much wind and rain and perhaps a storm, for the gulls know more about the weather than sailors do.(1) The seagull is a kind of______.
