Every morning, on his way to work, Mike passed an old man who was always at the same place with a cup in his hand hoping to get a bit of change from those who passed by. For most people, this person was someone to be ignored as if he didn’t exist, someone who they didn’t want to be bothered with. However, Mike would always say good morning to him and wish him a nice day and sometimes would drop a dollar or two in his cup. This behavior went on for several years until one day before retirement.
He told the man that he would no longer pass by because it was his last day on the job. The man took his hand and shook it warmly saying that he had always looked forward to seeing Mike not because he dropped a few dollars in his cup. He said he would miss him because he was one of the few people who said hello and bid him good day. The man also said that his warm words always brightened his day and helped him to continue.
We all have the power of words and we often do not recognize that some can be devastating(毁灭性的) while some can be encouraging.

Perhaps you don’t know your school principal very well. But you might be wise to take him or her seriously. Peking University will enroll students recommended by high principals this year. November 16, 2009 Peking University released a list of 39 high school principals in 10 provinces who have the chance to recommend students. If the students recommended pass a round of interviews by Peking University, they will have an extra 30 points added to their national college entrance exam scores if they apply to the university after the exam. Peking University said the reason behind the move was a desire to give students with comprehensive and special abilities a chance to stand out.
However, a survey conducted by leading Chinese portal sina.com showed 10046 out of 14227 people surveyed were against the new idea. Most said the recommendations were unfair on other students. Xue Yong, a Peking University alumni who is now an assistant professor at Suffolk University told the Qianjiang Evening News the experiment could be dangerous if it is abused. But Qu Jun, former deputy director of Shanghai municipal education commission, said the experiment represents much needed changed to the existing university entrance system, which has been criticized for many years.

If I were a boy again, I would practise my perseverance(毅力) more often, and never give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer(战胜)darkness. Perseverance can sometimes equal genius(天赋)in its results. If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention; I would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit of attention would become part of our life if we began early enough. If I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to the cultivation(培养)of the memory. I would strengthen that skill by every possible way, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately; But memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.
