The Dead Sea is really a large lake. The Jordan River runs into it. Its surface has an area (面积) of over a thousand square (平方) kilometres. Because there is no outlet (出水口) and the climate is very hot, the water is slowly dried up.
The water in the sea has an unpleasant smell and a very salty bitter taste. It is full of salt and other minerals. Human body will not sink (下沉) in it. Man can sit up there and read newspapers without sinking, but it is not a good place for swimming, because the water is bad for the skin.
No living things can live in it. That is why it is called Dead Sea.
