Look at your watch for just one minute. During that time in 1981, 239 babies were born in the world. Perhaps you think that isn’t much. In the next hour, over 14,000 more babies will be born on the earth. Just think how many more babies there will be born in one year. If this goes hour after hour, what will happen in a hundred years?

The population problem may be the greatest one of the world today. Two thousand years ago, there were only 250 million people on the earth. Four hundred years ago, the number was over 500 million. The population may be 8,000 million by the year 2000.

In China, the population problem is quite great, too. The Party’s leaders are paying much attention to it, but lots of people don’t think so. They like to do what they want. Some love more children. Some wish to have both son and daughter. Other would like to have not only daughters but also sons. Haven’t they ever thought the population problem? If nothing is done to stop this, things will get worse and worse. The figure of the world’s population will certainly be a terrible one. There will be only standing room on the earth some day.

  My respecting teacher

I always thought that a man who was wise (睿智的) and good would become rich, but this year I have learned that this is not always true. I learned this from my teacher. He is both wise and good, but is not rich at all, for being a teacher, he doesn't have a good income. He may be able to get more money if he gives up teaching for business. But he is so proud of being a teacher that he takes pleasure in helping young people. He stays at school from morning till late afternoon and works very hard. He always smiles at us when we go to ask him for help. He is kinder to us than anyone whom I've ever known. I think it must be easier to learn history or maths than to learn how to become such a man. He scolds (责备) us when we do something wrong, but it teaches us to try to do better. We all wish to study with him as long as possible, but that may be impossible. Some of us may become doctors, some be come businessmen, some become engineers, some become writers, but we all want one thing very much to become men like our teacher.

I wonder if there is any girl or boy who does not like to see a rainbow (彩虹) in the sky. It is so beautiful.

There is a story, saying that whenever you see a rainbow you should run at once to the place where it touches the ground, and there you would find a pot of gold. Of course it is not true. Neither you could find the pot of gold, nor could you ever find its end. No matter how far you run, it always seems far away.

A rainbow is not a thing that we can feel with our hands as we can feel a flower. It is only the effect (结果) for light shining on raindrops. The raindrops catch the sunlight and break it up into all the wonderful colours which we see.

It is called a rainbow perhaps because it is made up of raindrops and looks like a bow (弓).

That is why we can never see a rainbow in a clear sky. We see rainbows only when there is rain in the air and the sun is shining brightly through the clouds. Every rainbow has many colours in the same order. The first or the top colour is always red, next comes orange, then green, and last of all blue. A rainbow is indeed one of the wonders of nature.

(1) Children like rainbows because ________ .

[ ]

A. they are beautiful

B. they are like bows

C. they can find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow

D. they are good to crops

(2) We can not feel ________ with our hands.

[ ]

A. gold

B. a flower

C. a rainbow

D. a raindrop

(3) We can see a rainbow ________ .

[ ]

A. when it is raining heavily

B. when it is snowing

C. in a clear sky

D. when it becomes fine immediately after raining

(4) Which of the following is not right?

[ ]

A. A rainbow is always far away from us.

B. A rainbow is the effect of light shining on raindrops.

C. A rainbow is the product of human beings.

D. A rainbow is one of the wonders of nature.

(5) The first colour of a rainbow is always ________ .

[ ]

A. yellow

B. red

C. green

D. blue

阅读下列短文回答问题:

The most unusual museum in London is the Science Museum. In most museums, there’s no shouting and no running, and you aren’t allowed to touch the exhibits. But the Science Museum is different… because it’s noisy ! People talk about what they can see and do there, and some of the machines are noisy as well. Visiting the Science Museum is fun and it’s a great way to learn about science because you can work things out and try out ideas.

When I visit the Science Museum, I go to the Launch Pad. This is my favorite room because you can do physics experiments. For example, if you want to fill a bag with falling sand, you have to move a kind of truck on wheels into the correct position. I also go to the Rocket Show. You can learn how we travel into space and back again.

Then I go upstairs to the Human and Nature room. You can compare your speed with animals there. You hear a noise and push a button. If you aren’t fast enough, the lion catches you! I’m faster than all my friends, but the lion still catches me.

You can do a lot of things in this museum, but you have to obey some rules as well. For example, you mustn’t take photos of the exhibits in the museum. But you can buy postcards of them in the museum shops.

Above all, the Science Museum is free. That means you can drop in for a few minutes or you can stay as long as you like – it’s open every day, from 10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum. It’s my favorite museum in the whole world.

1.Where does Tony go first when he visits the Science Museum?

2.What can you try out in the Human and Nature room?

3.How much does it cost to go in the Science Museum?

4.How long can you stay at the Science Museum ?

5.What does the writer think of the Science Museum?

Ever since I was a child, my mouth has caused me trouble. I'm not a bad person; I have a hard time
learning when to keep my mouth closed.
My mom has told me again and again, "Robert, your constant bad words are hurting me. If you
continue to be this rude, you will get into big trouble."
It's been a problem at school several times too when teachers have told me something I didn't want
to hear. I used to feel it was my duty to stand up for myself.
One day in English class I began working on my homework until I heard a classmate talking behind
me. It was Nathaniel, talking to himself as usual.
I said ever so nicely, "Nathaniel, would you be quiet?"
Nathaniel continued talking to himself. I quickly shouted "Nathaniel, shut up!"
For the next five minutes, we threw hurtful words back and forth at each other.
"At least I don't have an ugly lazy eye like you!" I shouted.
I knew this would upset him deep inside. It would hurt his feelings and shut him up.
What I said filled him with anger. He tried to reach over my seat and grab me as he shouted, "That's
it! That's it!"
Surprised at his reaction, I sat back in my seat. Never had I seen Nathaniel act like this before.
Later on, we were taken to the principal's office.
There, Mr. Black, the principal, told us to discuss the matter. It wasn't until then that I finally found
that when I hurt someone physically, the wounds eventually heal. But when I hurt them with my words,
sometimes the pain (痛苦) never goes away.
At the end of the discussion, I said sorry to Nathaniel.
When I headed back to my room, I spent some time praying. I began to think about how often what
I said hurt others. But I believe that as I keep praying and asking God to help me, he'll tell me when to
keep my mouth closed.
