    　　Liu Xiang was the first Asian hero to win the men's 110m hurdles at the Olympic Games．

    　　When he crossed the finish line far ahead of the others in a world record－equaling time of 12.91 seconds, many fans burst into tears．It was Liu's first Olympics and he won the gold medal．In 2006, he set the new record of 12.88．

    　　When he won gold medals, he said in tears“I never thought I could run under so fast, and I never thought I would break the Olympic record, I am very, very excited．This is a wonder．I'm proud not just for myself and for Chinese but for Asia．My race went wonderfully．”Liu added,“It is an amazing experience being the Olympic champion．I want to thank many people．We Chinese have shown the world we can run as fast as anybody else．”

    　　When Liu was a grade four student, he was chosen by the Junior Sports School to practise jumping．But when a bone test showed he would not become a tall man, Liu was advised to give up practising after one year although he had won the national championship for his age group．Liu s parents also wanted him to give it up and study more at school, but Liu decided to continue．

    　　In 1998 when Liu Xiang, aged 15, met the famous coach Sun Haiping, his career changed greatly, Sun believed Liu was a rising star and he visited Liu's parents several times, finally they were persuaded to let Liu practise the 110 m hurdles．

    　　But Liu thinks 2004 is just the beginning, and he expects to be at his peak in Beijing in 2008．Liu Xiang said,“For some players, it's just a job．For me, it's what I love．”

    Venice is an attractive city in Italy. Tourists throughout the world love traveling to Venice. But sometimes you’ll have such strange experiences.     So the Italian government asked some of Italy’s biggest construction and engineering companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be built under the sea water to stop floods. Now the government are using 3 000 people and expect to spend nearly five billion euros(欧元) on it. The MOSE gates are being built at the inlets(海湾).Each MOST gate is 197 feet long ,28.5 to 37 feel tall, and weight up to 22 tons. It’s nearly the size of a 20-story building. Before the gates are in use, under the sea full of water. When the flood comes, the water in the gates will be poured out, and then the gates will be filled with air. So the gates can go up with the sea water. Once they’re in the right place, they will stop the sea water pouring into Venice. These gates will be able to deal with floods up to 10feet,and as long as the sea level(平面)rises no more than two feet in the next 100 years, the MOSE will work as expected.
    The MOSE project is now two-thirds done. The head engineer, Giovanni Cecconi, said, “This is a war. During the war, it’s not important that you win. It’s important that you’re alive. We’ve alive.” Anyway, this project is saving Venice from falling.

    Have you ever beard of Iceland? Iceland is a country, one-tenth of which is covered with ice. However, it is said that Iceland is the land of heat. Smoking volcanoes (火山), white steam (蒸汽) and hot springs are more amazing than the other sights including ice there.

There, water from the ocean continues moving up slowly into the spaces between hot rocks below the surface. And then the water is heated by hot rocks. Powerful machines and long pipes (水管) help bring the heated water to the surface. People in Iceland use natural hot water for hot springs. Besides, they use it to create electricity that can be used to heat homes and even greenhouses.

        Iceland is one of the few places on the Earth where active volcanoes lie below ice. Heat from the volcanoes creates a strange and wild beauty. Therefore, some people believe that it’s better to call the country “Heatland” instead of Iceland. If you have a chance to travel there, take it.
