Mr. and Mrs. Brown were going abroad for their holiday. When I waited in the living room， I saw my dad come up the path with a white envelope in his hand. I had waited all day for this. As soon as he set foot in the house， I reached over him to get it. He threw the envelope on the table and said that it was nothing to get excited about.
I was looking forward to seeing my report for my first year in high school. I opened the report and saw that I came in first in my class. I was feeling so excited. But when I saw my dad’s cold face and heard his cold words， I was really hurt by how he ignored (忽略) my hard work. I didn’t know why but said nothing， and just shut the door with a bang. I got a good mark and I wanted to share my happiness with someone， but I felt alone.
Thinking over what had happened to us， I suddenly realized something. I was so busy studying that I had kept away from my family unconsciously (不知不觉地). We used to watch movies and play tennis together on weekend afternoons. I wondered when that had stopped. Then I realized they had not stopped but I just no longer joined them.

As I went over to him， my dad said， “You’ve done well， and your mother and I are proud of you. But we do not want to use your achievements to define (定义) who you are.”

Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799， scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1，500 B.C. to the 1950s. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However， this doesn’t happen to everyone， so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness， he / she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.
Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness， people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago， left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children， but today they don’t have to.
