Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office. "The railway owes (欠) me $12. "she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office. " You sold me a ticket for May 22nd,but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me $12. "

Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. "Come into the office,Madam,"he said politely. "Fll check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd".

The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right,as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn't have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do,he smiled at the child. "You look sunburnt,"he said to her. "Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?"

"Yes",she answered, shyly. "The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!"

"That's fine," said Harry. "My little girl can't swim a bit yet. Of course, she's only three."

"I'm four,"the child said proudly. "I'll be four and a half."

Harry turned to the mother. "I remember your ticket,Madam,"he said. "But you didn't get one for your daughter, did you?"

"Er,well," the woman looked at the child. "I mean. . . she hasn't started school yet. She's only four."

"A four-year-old child must have a ticket,Madam. A child's return ticket to Jersey costs. . . Let me see, $13. 5. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe $1. 5. The law is law,but since the fault (过错) was mine..."

Once,a group of boys decided to play a soccer game. Each of them would bring something used in the match. So one would bring the ball, another the whistle, others the goalkeeper gloves, the corner flags.

But while they were picking the teams, there was an argument. They decided that the boy who had brought the most important object would pick the teams. However they couldn't choose which had been the most important object,so they decided to start playing and gradually drop what they had brought,to see which things were truly needed.

The first thing they dropped was the whistle, because the judge could just shout instead. Then the goalkeeper gloves, they managed to save the ball just as well without them. Neither did they really notice when they stopped using the corner flags. Finally they even replaced the football with an old tin (易拉罐) ,and still managed to keep playing.

When they were playing with the tin,a man and his son passed by. Seeing the boys playing like that, the man said to his son, "Look, son. Learn from those kids. Without even a ball they're managing to play football, even though they're never going to be able to improve playing in that way."

The boys heard what he said, and realized that because of their pride, what could have been a great match had turned into a shameful display, which they were hardly enjoying at all. At that moment, they decided to give up their selfish opinions, and to start playing the match again, from the start and with all the necessary objects.

And it really was a great game. No one thought about who was playing better or worse. Rather, they just paid attention to having fun and improving their game.

When doing things together, the important thing is to make sure things turn out for the best, rather than argue about how much each person has contributed.

c Pollution means adding dirty or harmful (有害的) things to land, air, water and so on. As a result, they are no longer pleasant or safe to use. Pollution is bad for animals and plants, and it even makes people's health in danger. In our daily life,we can see different kinds of pollution in many places. There are three main forms of pollution;land pollution, air pollution and water pollution.

Land pollution is caused by solid waste, such as cans, bottles and some plastic things which aren't broken down quickly. It makes the environment look very bad. However, air pollution is more serious than land pollution. It is much worse in cities and towns because of the fumes (废气) from traffic and the waste from human (人类) activities. When people drive their cars ,fumes which are most made up of C02,N02 and S02 are given off. After the gases get into the air, they may mix with clouds. Then they will become some harmful chemicals falling on the ground with rain. It is one of the reasons for soil erosion ( 土壤侵烛) which is one example of water pollution.

Various kinds of pollution will cause many health problems. People have realized they must change this serious situation. There are many ways to control pollution. To develop alternative energy (替代能源) is very popular in many countries. China, for example, has made up its mind to be a leader in this field. It is trying hard to make full use of energy from the sun and wind. It has paid plenty of money to make electric cars and trains instead of traditional traffic. We should also take action to make our environment cleaner every day. Take cloth bags while going shopping and drive cars less. We have only one earth. The barks of dogs surrounded (围绕) me as I walked into the animal shelter. They ran around their cages jumping up and down. My heart became soft when I saw these poor animals. I entered the building and saw more unwanted animals. A white rabbit jumped around in its cage. I walked around the cages, saying "oh" and "ah" to every animal,as they looked out of their cages, waiting for love and help. A little dog particularly attracted me. She was as gentle as a baby. I slightly touched her head as she sat on the floor. She licked (铬) my hand with appreciation. I could feel that she longed for an owner who would take good care of her.

Another small group of little animals were in the cage in the corner. They stayed together to keep warm. One of them let out a weak sound,as if it was calling to its mother. Recognizing my love and willingness (乐意) to help these little animals, the director suggested I give them a bath. I lifted one of them,Yukie, from his brothers and sisters. His black fur was as soft as cotton candy. I held him carefully in my hands. The sweet smell of soap surrounded the wash area. The little dog looked like a tiny fish, swimming happily in a pool. Water dropped down his black soft ears as he tried to shake off the heavy water. I covered Yukie with a towel so he wouldn't get a cold. After all the cleaning and drying,he looked as if he came from an expensive pet shop. I kissed his little face as I unwillingly placed him back.

Next,I walked some dogs around the building. When I opened the cages, they jumped out quickly, unable to hold back their urge for exercise. I ran around with them, touched them gently and talked to them.

It was time to leave. I quietly said to these poor animals that I would come again and look after them with love. The sad eyes and the faces of these lovely animals made quite an impression on me.
