Teaching kids to fish sometimes puzzles us parents. Now I'd like to give you a few tips.
First of all, start them young. Get them in a boat, or on the bank at as early an age as you possibly can.
This means paying close attention to their safety. Whatever you do, DON'T plan on any fishing yourself.
If fishing is going to happen, the fishing will be done by the kids with your help! This lets you pay attention
to them and not ignore (忽略) them while you fish.
Next, choose places where you can catch a lot of fish easily. At this point, it doesn't matter what kind
or how big; just make sure they can catch some. A small child's patience (耐心) is very short, and waiting
30 minutes for a bite will turn them off in a hurry. You may need to go to a small pond (池塘) where the
fish are dying to eat bread balls. Any type of fish will do. Remember, this is for them, not for you.
Cheer for every fish they catch as they fish. Take pictures. And if it's possible, take some home. Let the
child help you clean with a table knife, so he can't get hurt.
Make sure he makes and sees the connection from catching to cleaning to cooking. Let him see the fish
cooking, and talk about how good they are. Then when it's ready, make sure you talk proudly about the fact
that he or she has caught these fish, and "aren't they good?"
In this way, I'm sure your kids will be interested in fishing and good at fishing.
                                                         Title: Teach kids to 1
Start them at an 2              age ·Take 3              of their safety.
·plan a fishing trip for the kids not for yourself.
Plan the first fishing trips ·Choose places where the kids can 4              fish without difficulty.
·Don't care about what they are or 5              big they are.
6              for every fish they catch ·Take 7              while fishing.
·Take some home and let the child help to clean with a table 8            .
Cook the fish they have caught ·Let him see the fish cooking.
·Tell them parents are 9              of them for catching the fish.
Result ·Make them interested in fishing and 10              at fishing.
1. fish  2. early  3. care  4. catch  5. how
6. Cheer  7. pictures / photos / photographs  8. knife  9. proud  10. good

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在答题卡相应番号后横线处填入恰当的单词(注意:每个空格只填一个单词)
It is easy for many people to catch a cold in the springtime or fall. It makes us wonder if scientists
can send a man to the moon, why can't they find a cure for the common cold? The answer is easy.
There are actually hundreds of kinds of cold viruses out there. You never know which one you will
get, so there isn't a cure for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose
and cause a block in it. You feel terrible because you can't breathe well, but your body is actually
eating the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing
the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells. You may feel very
uncomfortable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people do different things to deal with colds. In the United States and some other
countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to make themselves feel better. Some people
take hot baths and drink warm liquids. Other people take medicine to stop various symptoms (症状)
of colds.
There is one interesting thing to note -some scientists say taking medicines when you have a cold
is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn't have a way to fight it
and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine
when you have a cold. It goes like this:
It takes about one week to get over a cold if you don't take medicine, but it takes only seven days
to get over a cold if you take medicine.

Like many people you may be dreaming of a career as a rock and roll star. There are two ways to go about
getting one. First there is the traditional (传统的) way. Find some friends and form a group. Learn to play the
guitar or the drums. Write your own songs. Spend hours arguing about the band name. then go out on the road.
The next step is to spend a year or two touring. If you are any good, the crowds will get bigger. In the end
an artist from a record (唱片) company may come to a show. If he or she likes you, there may be a deal (交易). This is the path traditionally followed by bands in the music industry. Success means fame and wealth. And
failure gives you some interesting stories to tell your children.
Over the last few years a different path to success has become known. Boy bands like Boyzone and girl
bands like Spice Girls don't come together on their own. They are created by managers and record companies.
Their image (形象) is strictly controlled. Professional (专业) song writers usually write their music. This is a
convenient arrangement (安排) and the public seems to love the result.
Though boy and girl bands have become very popular recently, there is a long tradition of making music in
this way. In the early 1960's an American businessman called Berry Gordy founded Motown Records. Motown
is short for "motor town". The record company was based in the city of Detroit, where thousands of African-
Americans had moved to work in the car industry. They brought with them a cultural tradition of writing and
performing music. This style later became known as "soul music". Berry Gordy was a diamond miner.
Motown stars were not just given songs to sing. They were also taught how to dress well and speak properly.

It is possible to do many simple tricks with numbers. Here is one trick. It has seven steps.
First, write down your house number. For example, if your address is 73 Lemon Street, you would write
down 73.
Next, double it. In other words, multiply it by two. Then, add five to this doubled number. For example,
if your address was 73and you doubled it, you would get 146. Then, if you added five, you'd get 151.
So, to repeat the first three steps, write down your house number, double it, and add five.
Fourth, multiply this number by 50. In our example here, if you multiply 151 by 50, you'll get 7550.
The fifth step is to add your age to this total. For example, if you're 26 years old, you should add 26 to this
total. In our example here, the result would be 7550 plus 26, you'll get 7576.
Sixth, you have to add the number of days in a year, which is 365. In our example here, 365 added to 7576
is 7941.
The seventh and final step is this: subtract 615 from the number that you have. In our example, 7941
minus 615 is 7326.
The result here, 7-3-2-6, is the trick. The first part of the number is the address and the last part of the
number is the age of the person. That is, 73 is the address that we started with, and 26 is the age that we
used.
If you follow these seven steps with any address and the age of any person. You will get the same result.
1. According to the trick, what number can you get if you are 16 years old and your house number is 85?
[     ]
A. 1685
B. 8516
C. 8165
D. 1658
2. What's the correct match for"multiply, plus, and minus"?
[     ]
A. "×, +, and-"
B. "÷, -, and +"
C. "×, -, and+"
D. "÷, +, and-"
3. How can your age number appear at the last part of the result?
[     ]
A. It's really a trick.
B. By taking all the steps except Step2 and Step 3.
C. By taking Step 6and Step 7.
D. By taking all the steps.
4. What's the secret of the trick?
[     ]
A. It's impossible to know.
B. By taking Step 2 and Step 4, we get the formula(公式):your address number ×2×50.
C. By taking all the steps except 1 and 2, we get the formula: 5×50+your age number+365-615=your
     age number.
D. Both B and C.

Jim suffered heart problems. In conversation he expressed little joy and it seemed that his life was
drawing to a close.
When his heart problems led to operation, Jim went through it successfully, and a full recovery was
expected. Within days, however, his heart was not beating properly. Jim was rushed back to operation,
but nothing was found to explain the cause of his illness. He died on the operating table on the day before
his 48th birthday.
Dr. Bruce Smoller, a psychologist, had had many conversations with him, and the more he learned, the
stranger he realized Jim's case was. When Jim was a child, his father, a teacher, suffered a heart attack
and stayed home to recover. One morning Jim asked his father to look over his homework, promising
to come home from school at noon to pick it up. His father agreed, but when Jim returned his father had
died. Jim's father was 48.
"I think all his life Jim believed he killed his father," Dr. Smoller says. "He felt that if he had not asked him
to look at his homework, his father would have lived. Jim had been troubled by the idea. The operation
was the trial (判决) he had expected for forty years." Smoller believes that Jim willed himself not to live
to the age of 48.
Jim's case shows the powerful role that attitude plays in physical health, and that childhood experiences produce far-reaching effect on the health of grown-ups. Although most cases are less direct than Jim's,
studies show that childhood events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as cancer, heart
disease and mental illness.
1. Jim was sent back to operation because ________.
A. his heart didn't work well
B. he expected a full recovery
C. his life was drawing to a close
D. the first one wasn't well performed
2. What made Dr. Smoller feel strange about Jim's case?
A. Jim died at a young age.
B. Jim died on the operating table.
C. Both Jim and his father died of the same disease.
D. Jim's death is closely connected with his father's.
3. From Smoller's words, we can infer that ______.
A. Jim's father cared little about his study
B. Smoller agreed that Jim did kill his father
C. Jim thought he would be punished some day
D. Smoller believed Jim wouldn't live to the age of 48
4. Which of the following could have strong effect on one's physical health according to the text?
A. a, b, d
B. a, b, e
C. a, c, e
D. b, c, d
a. One's genes.     b. One's life in childhood.    c. One's physical education.

The World Health Organization says obesity rates are rising in Pacific island countries. So, too, are
health problems linked to being overweight.
The WHO says a major reason for the rising obesity rates is an increase in imported foods. It says many Pacific islanders have replaced their traditional diets of vegetables and fruits with imported processed
foods.
Dr.Temu Waqanivalu is with the World Health Organization's South Pacific office in Suva, Fiji.He says many of the imported products lack nutritional value.
Temu Waqanivalu said:"In some of the places, you'd be amazed to see how a bottle of Coke is cheaper than a bottle of water.I think that represents the kind of offenvironment we've created that doesn't really
encourage or make lifestyle choices an easy choice for the population."
And a lack of physical activity among many Pacific islanders only adds to the obesity problem.
The WHO says more than 50 percent of the population is overweight in at least ten Pacific island
countries. The rate is as high as 80 percent among women in the territory of American Samoa.Fiji had the

Cut out part of a healthy person's liver and transplant it into a sick person--it sounds like a
complicated and dangerous operation , not to mention very expensive. But it is sometimes the
only possible cure for a seriously ill patient with liver disease.
Until now British scientists have just announced a new stem cell technique, which allows them
to grow healthy liver cells outside human bodies. According to the researchers, it could be another
five to 10 years before the technique can actually be used to help patients with liver disease.
However, they say the method might one day replace liver transplants altogether. The study was
led by the University of Cambridge and the Welcome Trust Sanger Institute, a British genomics
and genetics research institute. It was published in the journal nature on October 12,2011.
The researchers took skin cells from a patient with a mutation (变异) in a gene called
alphal-antitrypsin (a-l抗胰蛋白酶). This gene makes a protein that protects our bodies against
inflammation (炎症). People with changed or damaged alphal-antitrypsin are not able to release
the protein correctly from the liver, so the protein is trapped there and eventually leads to liver
cirrhosis (肝硬化).
Scientists then used an advanced technique to cut away the faulty section of DNA from a stem
cell and replace it with a corrected one, according to the journal. The stem cells went on to produce
fresh and healthy liver cells with normal protein levels. Scientists put the new liver cells into mice
and found that they worked very well.
Stem cells are the life source of all other cells in the body. They could transform medicine,
providing treatment for blindness, spinal cord injuries and other serous injuries. They could also be
used to produce new cells for damaged organs.
David Lomas, a Cambridge biology professor who worked on the team, said: "If we can use a
patient's own skins cells to produce liver cells that we can put back into the patient, we may prevent
the future need for transplantation. "

1. what is the best title of this passage?

A. How to transplant liver for patients
B. A new way to transplant livers for patients
C. The difficulty in curing liver patients
D. New life for liver patients

2. The first paragraph is written to _______.

A. show how difficult it is to cure liver disease
B. tell us what a liver transplant involves
C. introduce a potential cure for liver disease
D. show how serious liver disease can be

3.Why do some people get liver cirrhosis according to the article?

A. Because their bodies are lacking in alphal-antitrypsin.
B. Because their skin cells are not able to protect against inflammation.
C. Because the alphal-antitrypsin in their bodies is changed or damaged.
D. Because their liver releases too high a level of protein.

4. According to British scientists, liver transplant might ___________.

A. become history sooner or later
B. be replaced by a new stem cell technique in five years
C. be the only possible cure liver disease in the future
D. be prevented in the future

5. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Stem cells can keep liver cells healthy and fresh.
B. Equaling medicine, stem cells can cure blindness, spinal cord injuries and other serous injuries
C. Stem cells can replace the damaged organs.
D. All other cells in the body can't work well without stem cells
