Michelle was a student at University of California, Los Angeles. She is here to tell us how she feels about the city.

What were the best things about Los Angeles?

One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is the weather. I hate the cold and it never really gets that cold there. Plus, most of the time it’s usually sunny, which is good because I love going to the beach during the summer. There’s so much to do at the beach, but my favorite thing in L.A. was having a picnic on the sand with my friends.

What were the worst things about being there?

I disliked having to drive everywhere to get around because the city is so spread out. Los Angeles has a lot of traffic and sometimes it takes a long time to get somewhere close by just because the streets are so crowded. Also, a lot of people complain about the pollution.

Did you have any problems there?

Just the normal problems of living in any city, like watching out for pickpockets (扒手). Some people think Los Angeles has a lot of crime, but I think it’s as safe as any other city. Also, many people think driving is difficult because there is a lot of traffic and road rage (路怒症), but it just takes a little practice and a lot of patience.

What are the people like in Los Angeles?

There are all types of people in Los Angeles since the city is pretty diverse. For the most part, though, most of the people are friendly, calm and relaxed. Some people say that everyone in Los Angeles is beautiful, but I think that’s just a stereotype (模式化的印象).

Would you go back to Los Angeles?

Certainly. Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love the fact that it has all the nightlife and shopping of a big city, but also has access to beaches, parks, mountains and other places you can’t usually find in large cities. Between the weather and the beaches and all the fun things to do, it’s a great place to be.

1.We can learn from the text that Michelle _____.

A. hates the heavy traffic in Los Angeles

B. dislikes the cold weather in Los Angeles

C. thinks Los Angeles is small and crowded

D. enjoys driving everywhere in Los Angeles

2.What’s Michelle’s impression of the people in Los Angeles?

A. They get angry easily. B. All sorts of people live there.

C. They are patient and amusing. D. Everyone is kind and beautiful.

3.How does Michelle find Los Angeles?

A. Safe but noisy. B. Relaxing but busy.

C. Polluted and dangerous. D. Diverse and interesting.

Recently actor Adrien Grenier has launched(发动)a campaign to reduce the amount of single-use plastic usage in order to protect and save marine (海洋的)wildlife and the environment. Plastic drinking straws are among many single-use plastic products contributing to the great loss of marine life, but they’re a great place to start because they’re something that are used by millions of Americans who are unaware that they’re so damaging.

Americans use more than 500 million straws daily, which is enough to fill 127 school buses each day and they can’t be recycled. That means plastic straws might end up in oceans, where fish and other marine wildlife mistake the small bits for food and swallow them. After seeing a photo of a beached whale with a belly full of plastic, Grenier felt the inspiration to launch the Lonely Whale Foundation, hoping to inspire and educate others on the challenges faced by marine wildlife.

Along with stopping the use of straws, Grenier hopes to educate consumer on the dangers of other single-use plastic items such as grocery bags and water bottles. While many Americans use these plastic products in their daily life, there are many alternatives that can help protect the environment such as straws made from stainless steel, glass, and even bamboo instead of plastic.

In addition to quitting your straw habit, you can further help the environment by taking the I Choose to Reuse commitment, and stop your use of single-use coffee cups, checkout bags and bottled water. Instead, take advantage of any number of alternative reusable products.

Need another reason to stop drinking from straws? Grenier also says using straws can cause wrinkles!

2.What made Grenier think of the idea to launch the Lonely Whale Foundation?

C. The fuel that many whales beach on the shore.

Grandma Pugh sized up the baby like a pig at the farmers’ market. There was a pause and then she pronounced. “He’s got nice long legs.” She clapped her hands once in approval. But then she frowned and leaned forward. Everyone waited anxiously. The baby had opened his eyes and was staring up. “But those cross eyes won’t do,” she declared firmly, shaking her head in disappointment.

That had been Freddie Pilcher’s first meeting with Grandma Pugh. Since then, ten years had passed. Much to his grandmother’s satisfaction, she’d been proven right about the boy’s legs. He was a regular beanpole. Grandma Pugh had also been correct about his eyes. Freddie had been wearing glasses to correct his vision since he was two years old. His current pair was thick, and cheap-looking, but at least he could see.

Freddie not only had poor eyesight, but he was also clumsy. He wasn’t good at schoolwork either. But there was one thing that the boy was good at and it was all on account of the length of his legs. He could jump.

Freddie was the best jumper in school. Not only could he leap the furthest but also the highest. At breaktimes, he entertained the little ones by leaping over the school wall into Mrs Hobson’s garden and then rapidly jumping back. She had been up to see the head teacher several times because somebody had been crushing her vegetables.

It was badgers (獾), Freddie suggested, when quizzed by Miss Harpy — definitely badgers; no doubt about it. His dad had terrible problems with badgers. Only last week he had lost two rows of carrots. Freddie had woken one night and heard them tearing through the garden, a whole herd of them. They rooted up the lawn and dug up the vegetables. Terrible things, badgers. All the other children nodded their heads wisely. There was a moment’s pause in Class Three as everyone thought about the dreadful damage that badgers could do.

1.What do we know about Grandma Pugh?

A. She was present at the birth of baby Freddie.

B. She was unwilling to listen to the ideas of others.

C. She was a figure of great importance in the family.

D. She valued physical appearance over all other things.

2.Why did Freddie jump over the school wall?

A. To annoy his teacher.

B. To escape from school.

C. To amuse his schoolmates.

D. To damage Mrs Hobson’s vegetables.

3.Which of the following best describes Freddie’s physical appearance?

A. B.

C. D.

4.Why does Freddie talk about badgers in the final paragraph?

A. To explain the cause of the damage.

B. To warn the class about their danger.

C. To describe what happened to his father’s garden.

D. To make up an excuse for the cause of the damage.

The giant Sequoia trees in California grip tightly into the floor, but with shallow root, with little depth.Constantly challenging the natural elements and fighting off destruction, the giant Sequoia is "king of the forest".These trees are so tall and strong that eventually they become their own worst enemy. For you see,the Sequoia can resist lightning, storm, and wind, but eventually their roots cannot support their own weight and strength. After hundreds or thousands of years, they tumble to the ground like giant skyscrapers that have fallen from their bases after powerful explosives are detonated(引爆).

In many ways, many of us are like those giant Sequoias,so proud,so bit,so strong, withstanding wind and fire, yet not allowing our roots to seek deep into life's meaning. Many people have only shallow roots in soft ground, leaving them constantly on the edge of falling over to their destruction.

The first step we should take is to anchor ourselves with the firm intention of establishing strong roots of life and belief. We must trust the ground we stand on,and allow ourselves to plant the rich seeds of passion into our life's soil, nurturing it with the rain of love and joy, then allowing the fertilizer to soak into the very "veins" of the roots, leading to the trunk's healthy development. We've all seen many men with a strong trunk but no roots. They place the material dimension of wealth and finance above their own roots and foundational beliefs. They become so heavy with possessions, money, and the burden of wealth that they finally fall over as the giant Sequoia uproots itself and self-destructs.
