17.Why do we laugh and get amusement from so many different things,from puns (双关语) to pratfalls?Why are some things funny to some people and not to others?How is that while a successful joke can cause pleasure,a sick one can cause serious harm?
Over the centuries,various scholars have attempted to produce a universally agreed-upon theory of humor.Plato and Aristotle introduced the superiority theory,the idea that people laugh at the misfortune of others.Their theory seems to explain teasing,but it doesn't work well for knock-knock jokes.Sigmund Freud argued for his relief theory,the concept that humor is a way for people to release psychological tension and reveal their inner fears and desires.Histheory works well for dirty jokes,less well for most puns.
The majority of humor experts today agree with the incongruity theory,the idea that humor arises when there's a gap between what people expect to happen and what actually happens.Incongruity has a lot going for it-jokes with unexpected funny lines,for example,fit well.But scientists have found that in comedy,unexpectedness is overvalued.
With the goal of developing a new,more satisfactory explanation,I produced"the gentle violation theory",the idea that humor arises when something seems wrong or threatening,but is actually OK or safe.A dirty joke,for example,trades on moral or social violations,but it's only going to get a laugh if the person listening is open enough to consider the subject OK to talk about.Similarly,puns can be seen as linguistic violations that still make grammatical sense.
And while most humor theories have struggled to account for tickling (挠痒痒),or just avoided the phenomenon altogether,my theory accounts for even this kind of laughter.Tickling involves violating someone's physical space in a gentle way.People can't tickle themselves-because it isn't a violation.

24.What is the author's attitude towards Plato and Aristotle's theory?A
A.Critical.
B.Approving
C.uncaring
D.Unclear
25.According to Sigmund Freud's theory,we can infer thatB.
A.people will laugh when they see others suffer
B.telling dirty jokes is a relief of one's nervous feelings
C.unexpectedness can explain how humor works
D.tickling doesn't involve psychological tension
26.According to the author,why are some things funny to some people but not to others?D
A.Because the sense of humor varies greatly from person to person.
B.Because people have different expectations for the same thing.
C.Because some people lack the sense of safety deep in their heart.
D.Because people's understanding of violation is different.
27.What is the author's main purpose of writing this passage?C
A.To draw people's attention to the research of humor.
B.To criticize people's misconceptions about humor.
C.To explain what exactly causes people to laugh.
D.To prove the sense of humor can be developed.

"I'm not surprised,"Danish parenting expert and co-author of The Danish Way of Parenting Jessica Alexander tells me."The first year of a child's life is considered so important in Denmark.Danish parents are much less stressed because they get good maternity and paternity leave (孕产假).The atmosphere is much calmer and,if mothers are getting more time off,that goes hand in hand with less stress,more contact,more routines and less crying."She pauses before throwing in a final tip:"Oh,and Danish babies sleep outdoors a lot."
In Denmark,a woman is given four weeks pregnancy leave followed by 52weeks of paid leave that can be shared between parents.And Alexander thinks there is another important reason why Danish babies cry less:breastfeeding."It's just the done thing in Denmark,"she says of a country that has the world's highest breastfeeding rates."In other countries,there are continual discussions about whether you should or shouldn't breastfeed.In Denmark,breastfeeding has never gone out of style.And everyone does it for a year."
For Iben Sandahl,Alexander's co-author,it comes down to the Danish attitude to life in general."We are an honest and pure people,"she tells me."We are surrounded by social support and are less likely to become angry,sad or annoyed when our babies are crying.And we are good at embracing (拥抱) all kinds of feelings,so we aren't scared.Instead,we try to connect with the babies when they cry.It's how babies communicate and it's about trying to understand it."

28.Which of the following can make a baby cry less?B
A.An effective healthcare system.
B.More company from a parent.

8.There's always that one student who never speaks. They constantly stare down at the desk or their work, afraid to direct their eyes else.Occasionally, they'll glance your way but only to look back down again. It is clear from their body language that the student is uncomfortable, but there's no way in making him feel at home. The timidity (胆小,羞怯) and the vulnerability(脆弱) in his eyes say all that needs to be said.
Though this student is an extreme example of an introvert(内向的人),there are still students like the student mentioned above.I know that one of this kind hide in the shadows of each of the world's classrooms.
In some countries, this little boy may swift through life successful, wealthy, and content with his life. However, the introvert cannot find comfort in America where there are outgoing, socially confident people, talking, shouting, and laughing for the world to hear.
America is a nation of those who peak freely. In fact, one of the most prized clauses of our Constitution is the freedom of speech. There is nothing we love more than the right to speak as we please,so much so that the burning of the American flag is a protected speech.Though it is looked down upon, the person who burnt the flag will not deserve a punishment of any kind. It's legal.
What seems to not be legal, however,is shyness. In a nation full of discussion, those who fear of speaking will not get by.In my high school, for example, teachers often hold Socratic Seminars of class discussion where students are expected to voice their opinions.Stressing the fact that what is said does not have to be correct, teachers encourage students to speak up.Most of the grades in my classes,in fact, rely heavily on participation.
Personally,I dislike public speaking.Class discussion where students mention repeated points over and over again is not my strength, but I must force myself to raise my voice. If I don't,often times there are other people talking for me.
Gradually I realized something else.Speaking stimulates the mind, enhances one's thoughts, and establishes a sense of confidence that wouldn't otherwise have been instigated. It may be uncomfortable and it may be embarrassing, but it's all worthwhile in the end.
Although I stress the importance of social confidence,it is not unheard of to see introverts stand out in various activities. In college, for example, they would be studying rather than spending the day with friends. They would be seen in a library rather than at a social event.Although these types of students lack the outgoing personality, they do not always lack the motivation and desire to succeed.Often times, the introverts will gather to form a friend group.Their happiness is from what brings them pleasure, and if they are content without speaking their mind,so be it.

B.Negative
C.Neutral

15.The strong protests against constant testing are a reaction mainly against the mindless test-prep(针对训练) associated with reading tests.Math tests,which are based on an actual curriculum,aren't the main issue.Prepping for them usually helps improve math proficiency.But prepping for reading tests have had only a short-tem effect,and hasn't helped reading ability in the long run.
If you look at recent scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress,you will see that there's a gentle boost in reading scores for grades 4 and 8,but not for 17 years olds.The reading proficiency of high school seniors had not been changed since the great verbal decline of the 1970s,which was well documented by drops in scores on the SAT.So,why haven't the short-term early boots in grades 4and 8translated into better verbal scores in grade 12?Reading tests in later grades are more knowledge-intensive than the tests in the early grades.Scholars of the subject showed that 12th-grade scores declined in the 1970s and stayed flat,because of a narrowing of the school curriculum.
The time-consuming test preparations with endless exercises on"finding the main idea"and"questioning the author"have become the main cause of today's curriculum narrowing.Emphasis on reading and reading tests have helped to cause low reading scores among senior students.The underlying reasons for this paradox(悖论) are not widely understood among test makers and other specialists:Prepping for reading tests has had a negative effect on the curriculum,because the tests themselves,not to mention the strategy exercises,are based on an incorrect understanding of reading ability.
Reading ability is very topic independent.How well students perform on a reading test is highly dependent on their knowledge of the topics of the test passages.Yet the topics on our current reading tests don't have anything to do with the topics studied in school.Worse,there's no short-term way of preparing for a general reading test other than by doing topic-indifferent skill-exercises.It involves teaching students how to figure out the meaning of a test passage,even when they know little about the topic.This kind of unproductive and boring test-prep ceases to have an effect.
That's why reading scores were higher when schooling was more knowledge-intensive.A knowledge-oriented curriculum will,over time,produce higher verbal abilities than a test-prep curriculum.Over 13years of knowledge-intensive schooling,students,including disadvantages ones,can learn quite a lot about a lot of topics,greatly increasing their ability to make high scores on a reading test.

58.According to Paragraph 1,constant reading tests are receiving strong protests probably becauseC.
A.they are a reaction against the mindless test-prep related to reading tests
B.Math tests which are based on an actual curriculum aren't the main issue
C.prepping for them hasn't boosted high school seniors'reading proficiency
D.prepping for them fails to produce any effect for students'reading skills
59.Emphasis on reading had contributed to low scores in higher grades becauseD.
A.the test-prep associated with reading tests is too time-consuming
B.there's no short-term way of preparing for a general reading test
C.the prepping for reading tests is unproductive and boring
D.test experts fail to understand reading proficiency correctly
60.The suitable title for this text could beD.
A.Strong Protest Against Constant Testing
B.Reading Ability is Very Topic Dependent

D.Why Reading Test Scores Flatten Out in 12th Grade.
