On Friday morning, I was waiting in the corridor with my class for the physics exam. Glancing back from the front of the queue, I found my best friend Terry, who was treating me like I didn’t exist during the past two weeks,   36  all my calls and messages.
With all the students seated in the exam room, Mr. Reed, our physics teacher, talked to the class and announced the exam. I hated physics and felt it hard to   37  my paper. I was just looking up when a    38  caught my eye. I could hardly believe it! Terry had her phone on her left knee and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good    39  ? I almost put my hand up to tell the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? However, it wasn’t   40   ! So I nodded to Mr. Reed. He walked   41   down the row of tables. Terry was busy with her phone so that she didn’t even find Mr. Reed had   42   her. She looked up from her phone with a frightened expression. Before she had a chance to explain, Mr. Reed took her   43   and told her to leave the room. Terry started crying as she walked to the door, looking back over her shoulder at me, sad and ashamed.
After the exam, I received a text message from Terry, saying “I’m really   44  that I’ve been avoiding you lately but it’s been the hardest two weeks of my life. My dad has a heart attack and he’s been in hospital. He has a(n)    45   today and I am really worried. I know it is stupid, but I was trying to send a text message to my mum to see how it was going. Then Mr. Reed caught me and thought I was   46   . I wish I’d told you what’s been happening. I know I shouldn’t   47  who my friends are. Will you forgive me?” At these words, from my deep heart sprang up a burst of guilt along with the belief: Friendship is an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure.

The house was quiet at 5 a.m. and Tim’s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the big freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt of the cave last night. The purring (轻微颤动声) of the freezer had been the sea.
Tim pulled on a sweater and put some apples into his schoolbag. It was too early for breakfast. He’d eat after he’d been through the cave, sitting on the rocks and staring at the sea.
He wished he had a proper pack. His schoolbag would have to do. What else? Sandwiches ---but his mother might wake up if he started pulling out bread for sandwiches, she’d want to know why he had to leave so early. He settled for some biscuits, and left a note stuck to the table.
Gone to Michael’s Back tonight .Tim.
The sky was high and soft and light outside, though the sun still wasn’t up. Even the highway up the hill was quiet as he made his way down the street. The wind from the sea was fresh and sweet.
The sandhills still breathed heat from yesterday’s sun, though the top of the sand was cool. He ran down to the beach impatiently, but there was no one, just dry sand dancing in the early wind and seabirds marching up and down watching the waves.
The light changed suddenly. The first rays of sunlight stretched across the sea. The sun was pushing its way over the edge of the world.
Over the first rocks, along to the point, Tim glanced back. The beach was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky.
He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it. He had to force himself to go closer. Why was it so much more mysterious now? But it would be silly to go back now after so much trouble. He needn’t go in all the way …

A man claiming to be a pastor(牧师) apparently tried to stiff a waiter on a tip, explaining that his work for God allowed him not to leave one.
A photo of the receipt, posted to Reddit.com, shows a bill for $34.93 with an automatic 18 percent gratuity(小费) (or $6.29) added above a blank space for an additional tip.
“I give God 10%,” the diner wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip. “Why do you get 18?” He then wrote “Pastor” above his signature, and an emphatic “0” where the additional tip would be. (The automatic gratuity, however, had already been added to the total.)
The Reddit user who submitted the image explained in the comments section that the receipt was part of a total bill for a party of 20, which is why the gratuity was automatically added.
“Parties up to eight ... may tip whatever they’d like, but larger parties receive an automatic gratuity," the server wrote. "It’s in the computer; it’s not something I do.”
The server added: “They had no problem with my service, and told me I was great. They just didn’t want to pay when the time came.”
Scribbling(乱涂) notes on receipts has become something of a trend. Earlier this month, the manager of a North Carolina Red Robin surprised an overdue pregnant woman by comping her meal.
“Once seated, a manager came up to us and started talking,” the woman's husband told Consumerist. “He was extremely friendly and jokingly asked my wife if this was her last meal before heading to the hospital.”
When the check came, a note from the manager next to her portion of the bill read: “MOM 2 BEE GOOD LUC.”
“It was a pleasant surprise and made my tired-of-being-pregnant wife a little more cheery,” the man said.
小题1:What did the pastor mean by saying, “I give God 10%. Why do you get 18?”
A.He was bargaining with the waiter.
B.He didn’t mean to pay the gratuity at all.
C.God gave him the privilege not to pay a gratuity.
D.The gratuity had already been paid by his friends.
小题2:What do you learn from the article?
A.The pastor paid ten percent gratuity of the meal to God.
B.A party of six diners can choose whatever gratuity they want to pay.
C.According to the husband, the wife enjoyed the process of being pregnant.
D.The pastor paid $34.93 in total for the meal.
小题3:What does the underlined word “stiff” mean?
A.amuseB.abuseC.persuadeD.fail to pay

When responding to any adult, you must answer by saying “Yes ma’am” or “No, sir.” Just nodding your head is not acceptable.
Because I grew up in rural North Carolina, this rule comes    36   to me, and it seems the obvious choice to come first. If you want children to respect you, you have to let them know    37 . Simply telling them you want them to address you by saying “sir” lets them know   38     you expect them to treat you. I also tell my students it’s a very useful tool when    39  with adults, and furthermore it also     40   handy for any adult interacting with another adult. Case in point: I was   41    the phone recently with the phone company discussing the inaccuracies(差错) of my    42  . The lady I spoke to was not 43   and seemed annoyed.    44  , in the midst of the conversation, I threw in a “yes, ma’am,” and her entire  45  changed. She became far more helpful and   46  to deal with, and she   47  cutting my bill in half.
Some of my students in Harlem were to be   48  for a chance to attend a high-rated junior high school. The school only had thirty openings for the following year, and twelve of my students were   49  the many kids across the city who applied for the spots. I practiced what the interview would be   50  with my students, and one main thing I stressed was, “  51  you say ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘no sir’ no matter what!” Weeks after the interviews, I was delighted to hear that all twelve of my students had been   52  . When I talked with the admissions director at the school, the main   53  he made over and over was how   54   my students were in their interviews. It seemed like just such a simple thing to do, but it gets   55  .
