    If all this were not bad enough，problems with alcohol abuse are now spreading to an ever-younger age group．
    The proportion of pupils aged 12-15 who had had an alcoholic drink in the previous week rose in the last decade from 14 percent to 21 percent．Today，more than 40percent of all 15-year-olds admit to having had a drink in the past week．Much teenage crime and destruction is drink related．
    To his credit，the Executive has focused his attention on alcohol abuse problem．Behind the scenes，the
    Executive is discussing how far it should go in trying to persuade Scots to drink in a more sensible fashion．The First Minister is known to be against an alcohol ban on the lines of prohibition on public smoking．He is correct that such a move would not be accepted by the people and，anyway，general prohibition tends to drive substance abuse underground rather than eliminate it．
    Nevertheless，a debate is emerging on what controls to put on the easy availability of alcohol，especially to the young．As we report today，Donald Gorrie，the senior Liberal Democrat MSP，is launching a campaign in the Scottish Parliament（议会）to prohibit supermarkets from offering cut-price promotions on alcoholic drinks，in line with a similar ban on such promotions to off-licences and public houses introduced earlier this year．
    It remains to be seen if it is technically feasible to define sales promotions of alcohol in a supermarket in such a way as to control them．There is also a reasonable argument that it is better to have people buy drinks at a supermarket，where the likelihood is that they will consume the alcohol at home rather than drink in public．On the other hand，much of the alcohol consumed by underground drinkers comes from the family supply．Perhaps the real solution is to question the cheapness of alcohol across the board．
    Nevertheless，Mr．Gorrie has opened an important public discussion．He has a talent for making parliament confront awkward issues，and alcohol is one such issue．

    14．The more scientists study pigeons，the more they learn how their brains operate in ways not so different from our own．
    In a new study，researchers found that pigeons can categorize and name both natural and man-made objects-and not just a few objects．These birds categorized 128 photographs into 16categories．
    Ed Wasserman，an author of the study，says the finding suggests a similarity between how pigeons learn the equivalent of words and the way children do．
    In an experiment the researchers used a computerized version of the"name game"where three pigeons were shown 128 black-and-white photos of objects from 16 basic categories：baby，bottle，cake，car，cracker，dog，duck，fish，flower，hat，key，pen，phone，plane，shoe，tree．They then had to peck（啄） on one of two different symbols：the correct one for that photo and an incorrect one that was randomly chosen from one of the remaining 15 categories．The pigeons not only succeeded in learning the task，but they reliably transferred the learning to four new photos from each of the 16 categories．
    Pigeons have long been known to be smarter than average birds．They have a"homing instinct（返巢本能）"that helps them find their way home，even when blindfolded（蒙住眼睛）．They have better eyesight than humans and have been trained to spot orange life jackets of people lost at sea．They carried messages for the U．S．Army during the two world wars．
    McMurray，another author of the study，says"Our testing methods can be used with any type of animal that can interact with a computer screen．"
    He also says，"Contrary to people's belief，the research shows the methods with which children solve this huge problem may be shared with many species．"

    7．Life is filled with regrets．Ask anyone around you what their regrets are and they usually have no difficulty coming up with many items on their"regret list"．And for some reason our twenties are ripe for a field of regrets．Perhaps it's because as we get older we look back on that period of adulthood as the height of freedom and autonomy．As we move into middle age，we look back and wish that we had made better choices and taken more opportunities．Here's a list of things that we regret not doing in our 20s．

    2．Making an earlier investment
    How many times have we kicked ourselves for not starting our 40l Ks in our twenties，for not putting our excess cash in long term investment，for not investing in our future early．No matter how much we try，we can never get back to the head start that we have missed．Playing catch-up in our 40s and 50s is very difficult．
    　3．Better planning
    I regret not focusing more on where I wanted to go in life，what I wanted to do，who I wanted to be and what it would take to get there．With some more planning in our 20s，we'd be further ahead in our 40s and perhaps a bit happier as well．
    　4．                    
    I wish I had learned to ski and paint，speak Italian and tango．I regret not living somewhere else before settling down．Others have said they regret not pursuing their hobbies or learning to skydive or climbing mountains．I prefer to stay on the ground，but I do regret not learning more，not trying new things．
    　5．Pursuing a more meaningful career
    Many of us wish we had taken more career risks，opted for meaning over money，pursued the career path we wanted instead of what we were expected to do or simply following the path that was laid out before us．How much better to have explored our options and pursued meaningful work in our 20s than to have spent 20years doing something we don't love．
    Life is good； don't misunderstand．Few of us walk around every day pining for our youth，at least I hope not，but we do occasionally look back with a wistful sigh and wish that we had planned more，lived more，and stretched ourselves more when we had the freedom and energy to do so．
