    1．Nikola Tesla was a great inventor，engineer，and physicist．He is best known for his contribution to
    the design of the modern alternating current （AC）（交流电） electricity supply system．
    Tesla started working in the electrical fields before he came to work for Thomas Edison in the United
    States in 1884．However，he soon made up his mind to set up his own labs and companies so as to carry on
    further study of a range of electrical devices．His AC induction motor（交流感应电动机） was given a
    patent by George Westinghouse，who also hired Telsa as an expert to help develop a power system using
    alternating current．
    Tesla's achievements and his abilities to demonstrate his great inventions made him famous all over
    the world．Although he made a large sum of money from his patents，he spent a great deal on various
    experiments over the years．In the last few decades of his life，he ended up living in the limited place-
    Room 3327of the New York Hotel，occasionally making unusual statements to the press．Because of such
    kind of statements and the nature of his work over the years，Tesla gained a fame as"mad scientist"．He
    died in debt on January 7，1943．
    Tesla's work became less and less known to the public after his death，but since the 1990s，his fame
    has come back in popular culture．In 2005，he was listed as the top"100Greatest Americans"．His work
    and great inventions are also at the center of other theories and have also been used to support various
    UFO theories and so on．In 1960，in honor of Tesla，the"tesla"was used in the SI unit（国际标准单
    位）measure for magnetic field strength．

    16．At 2 pm on 5 December 1945，five US bombers took off from Fort Lauderlale in the USA for a training flight in perfect weather．Shortly afterwards，the pilots radioed that their flight instruments were all malfunctioning．Two hours after take-off，all contact with the planes was lost．A reconnaissance plane was immediately sent off to search for the missing planes．Within 20 minutes，radio contact with it had also been lost．No trace of any of the planes was ever found．In all，six planes and 27 men had disappeared into the air．
    The disappearance of the six planes was far from being the first mysterious incident in the area：for years，navigational problems and strange magnetic forces had been reported．The disappearance was not even the greatest disaster within the triangle．The Cyclops，a 19，000-ton US ship was sailing from Barbados to Norfolk，Virginia in March 1918，when it vanished with its crew of 309 from the surface of the ocean without making a distress call and without the slightest wreckage ev er being found．
    The losses of boats and planes in that area defy explanation．The disasters are the origin of a new phrase in the English language-the Bermuda Triangle and this phrase has entered legend．The Bermuda Triangle has been called the Devils'Triangle，the Triangle of Death，the Graveyard of the Atlantic．It has swallowed up 140 ships and planes and more than 1，000 people．Today many airmen and sailors are still afraid of that area of the Atlantic Ocean．

    11．Money is the root of all evil （邪恶） and new study claims there may be some truth behind the saying．Scientists at the University of California Berkeley，US，announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do immoral things，such as lie or cheat，than poorer people．The scientists did a series of eight experiments．They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences （PNA《美国国家科学院院刊》）．
    They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley．They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks．Nearly 45percent of people driving expensive cars ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30percent of people driving more modest cars．
    In another experiment，a group of college students was asked if they would do immoral things in various everyday situations．Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change．Students from higher-class families were more likely to act dishonestly．
    According to the scientists，rich people often think money can get them out of trouble．This makes them less afraid to take risks．It also means they care less about other people's feelings．
    Finally，it just makes them greedier．"Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more，and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self-interest，"said Paul Piff，lead scientist of the study．
    Piff pointed out that the findings don't mean that all rich people are untrustworthy or all poor people honest．He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts （本能） and values in different ways．
